Oath Cerimony Optional?

I'm not looking for life advice right now, I wanted to know if the Oath was optional. It isn't, so I'll just figure it out when I receive the date. I'll plead to have it in March with the IO and go from there.

I must tell you this true story. It relates directly to your situation, but may be more humorous then helpful. My brother-in-law became a perm resident in 1990. He was scheduled for his oath taking in 95. He failed the first test and then passed the second two weeks later. He is Filipino. He is also noted for conducting many, many all-nighters. Well, he decided to conduct an all-nighter the day before the oath. Needless to say he was still in that state prior to the oath. I take him to the Hart Plaza in Detroit where the oath is to take place. There are about 2000 people there along with one of the federal judges to administer. Everyone gets in line to retrieve there paperwork to include the Naturalization certificate. My brother-In-Law gets his and comes back to take a seat. The process is taking way too long. My brother-in-law who is still 1000 sheets to the wind says "Lets get out of here". I tell him he needs to take the oath. He insists we get out of there. What does he do? He gets up and leaves and I chase after him. Did he make a mistake? He is still a US Citizen until this day and so are his wife and kids. I am in no way making lite of that important moment in many peoples lives, but that day was so, let me say, awakening.

I would say if you got a job lined up in canada and pays decent take it and give your new employer heads up of that you need a few days off in the coming months.

one hr oath will open many doors up for you...for your future if need be...

Good luck whatever you decide

Brad - sorry to hear your news. Is there anyone on VJ who's been through the same office as your interview will be at? If nothing comes up - try begging/pleading with the IO and explain the situation that you may have to move due to losing your job and you want to get this resolved. I see an issue though with even if you have same day....how are you getting your new US passport in time....would they mail it to a Cdn address?

I heard in some cases they let you take oath after your interview, that same day, if a judge is available. Try to ask if that is possible and explain your situation. Best of luck to you.

It's only 13 days away!

Wrong. He has his interview in 13 days. The Oath Ceremony may be a month or more away.

You don't need to wait for a passport before leaving the country for work. Once you have the certificate you can leave, and apply for your passport at your leisure.

And wrong again. Sure he can leave with his Canadian passport. It's as legal as climbing a fence or robbing a convenience store, which means it's illegal. US citizens are not only required to enter the US with a US passport, but also to leave the US with a US passport.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Thought your not a usc until you have been sworn in at oath with cert in hand.....so until then he's is legal to leave on his canada pp and return on his p.r card..

whatever happens between interveiw and oath is his business. unless he has the same day oath which not many do anyway..

But after his oath yep JB your correct he must leave/return on his usc pp or pp i.d card

Even in a small town, we have these loan shark payday loan places that charge outrageous interest that is finally being looked into, counted five of them. And most of the jobs are based on a 39.5 hour work week, part time they call it so no benefits are given. So how are honest people suppose to have a 40 week reserve when we are living in a country run by crooks?

:ot:

this must vary state to state right? in california you must work 32 hours to be considered full time and to another pp you are eligible for unemployment benefits based on earnings not hours worked. hopefully the op will be ablt to take advantage of that to get through the hump.

:ot2:

best of luck to op

I have my interview in 13 days. I found out today I have lost my job, and I have enough cash to stay here for 43 more days. April 1st I will need to leave the US and move back to Canada until I can get on my feet.

I heard from a Filipino that she didn't go to the Oath, and they just mailed her all of the information like passport app and naturalization certificate. Is it possible to not be present for it? My guess is I will be scheduled for an oath in April and I won't have the ability to fly down for it.

Thoughts/feedback would be appreciated.

The oath taking will take a month to schedule. If you have 43 days left minus 13 days for your interview you got 30 days left so a month is 30 days, you can stay for a week or 2 to have your US card/Passport made. Have it rush. A few days delayed to go back to Canada won't be that bad...You can find a way, maybe a friend or family/relatives can help you out during that time of waiting.

Hope you can make it...
