"Extremist thought has become so mainstream that what we need to question in Pakistan is what people think constitutes extremism now," said Fasi Zaka, a 34-year-old radio host and columnist.

The same is happening here among the non-Muslims.

Which American politician has been killed lately for taking a position on an issue? I'd say there's less of it than in the 60's with JFK, MLK and RFK being murdered long before the popular talk radio format.

Which American politician has been killed lately for taking a position on an issue? I'd say there's less of it than in the 60's with JFK, MLK and RFK being murdered long before the popular talk radio format.

The fact is, assassinations and attempted assassinations have a volatile history in world politics. In the US, the 1960's is notable for several extremely high profile murders, but political murders and attempts on the lives of notable politicians doesn't stop there.

Others include Ronald Reagan, who survived a murder attempt in 1981. San Francisco mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, both killed in a single event in 1978. Larry Flynt, porn publisher and candidate for CA governor, and George Wallace, candidate for president, were both permanently paralyzed by shooters during their election campaigns in 1978 and 1972, respectively.

President Gerald Ford survived two attempts on his life in 1975. In 1994, there were two foiled attempts to breach White House security, one by a pilot who crashed on the White House lawn, and one in a plot to murder President Clinton over the Lewinsky scandal. In 2001, shots were fired at the White House at close range by a man who was wounded and subdued by security. A number of lesser known American politicians have been killed or wounded for their stands on sensitive issues.

Last, but not least, let's not forget the anthrax attacks leveled at several prominent journalists and US Congressmen in 2001, which killed five people and caused a national panic. Those were attributed to a disgruntled Army scientist.

And the beat goes on . . .

Ah yes, two kills from the 70's, some high profile attempts from the same era, a couple more recent failed attempts on politicians here in the US and we have comparable problems to Pakistan and other MENA nations? Don't think so.

Reagans attempted assassin, for example, was a nut job who thought Jody Foster might fall in love with him. Not a religious zealot inspired by calls for Reagans death for aposty from the collective pulpits of any religions spiritual higherarchy...

Apples and oranges...

Wow more baiting. Double *yawn*

Got any more tricks up your sleeve?

Nope. Got any actual opinion on the subject at hand in the OP?

The topic is harsh archaic law imposing the death penalty for blaspheme of Islam. Sub-topic murder of Moderate Muslim politician murdered by his own Muslim bodyguard at the urgent call of Muslim leaders calling for his destruction for apostasy.

Further there have been several threads on the death sentence for blaspheme case, this OP adds a new twist fully of interest and making the issue timely for further discussion.

If you believe that dismissing your own history makes you better than others, than you'll only be better in your own mind. History will judge you differently.

Sometimes a topic lends itself to an argument religious zeal is not the motivation for actions, other times, this OP and the original story for example expose the reality that such an argument fails miserably in this instance.

I think this particular incident illustrates brilliantly what I have said over and over, there is a tremendous conflict within various factions in the Islamic faith. I continue to hope the side this poor murdered man wins.

If he had not been killed for this they would have found another reason to kill him....sadly politicians in Pakistan have a short life span.......i see this as more of lets get rid of the politicians that we want out of office more than him being killed for his stand on blasphemy i saw a lot when we lived in Pakistan and this seems to be the way that the government is changed there just look at the history of those that have been in power in Pakistan

just my opinion
