I have a question regarding the birth certificate for the I-129F. I just read on another post the USCIS requires the "birth certificate long form" for proof of citizenship. Is this true? I sent them the regular certified birth certificate, front and back. I had an extra one so I sent them the original. I hope this will be sufficient.

Thanks

Long form it is. If you don't have it, get it. Alternatively, have a copy of all pages of your passport ready to respond to the RFE.

What is a "long form" birth certificate? The official State of Ohio certified birth certificate is not enough?

Basically I think USCIS wants to see your parents' names on the birth certificate. Some states (and in Canada, provinces) have small birth certificates and long ones, the long one obviously containing more information. If the certificate you have on hand has your parents' name on it, it should suffice. If not, you will need to obtain the long form.

I'm confused. Why don't they state this in the instructions for the I-129F? It only says birth certificate.

Personally I don't know why it doesn't say the exact requirements.

Read my post above and if you don't have the "long form" or a certificate that shows your parents' names, just photocopy every (even blank) page in your passport and send it in. Problem solved.

Great! The certificate I sent them includes my parents name and their place of birth. Its signed by the city clerk with seal.

It sounds like you sent them what they need then. In my 11 months on VisaJourney, I've never seen anyone say they were RFE'd for their birth certificate so you should be just fine.

If they don't let you know which BC they require, isn't it their fault and not yours? I know long form is required for the beneficiary in many cases, but have never heard of it being required for the I129f. Passport is fine if your bc doesn't have this info for the petition. The visa interview required docs will be different, and the checklists I have seen state long form on them. Someone should clarify where this long form requirement for I-129f is coming from so it is proven that it is not simply poor information on the forums.

I've been here longer and seen more. Yes, there would be an RFE if a short form BC was all that was sent as evidence of US Citizenship. Sound like this BC was just fine though.

This was very confusing to see for me when I filed mine. Therefore I erred on the side of sending too much instead of not enough. I copied all pages of the passport and the front and back of my birth cert. I'm also from the state of ohio and have never seen any other birth cert other than the one I had. If the parents names places of birth your place of birth full name date of birth and date of certificate filing are the long form then thats all the state of ohio issues.

A good question that was raised, and maybe you can help answer it is: if USCIS requires the "long" form, why don't the instructions say that? For everyone's benefit, this a direct paste from the instructions PDF on the USCIS site for the I-129F:

"A. If you were born in the United States, give USCIS a copy, front and back, of your birth certificate."

Nothing about what kind of birth certificate they're looking for.
