Kidnapped Canadian

On April 30, 2010 I received the first of dozens of email messages with the subject heading "Kidnapped Canadian." They were from Rachel and Kenneth Murray Danard (he goes by his middle name), Canadian citizens who reside in Alberta. On occasion I changed the message headings to reflect the specific topic, e.g., "FOIA waiver form," but inevitably it was changed back. After receiving Mr. Danard's alien file from the immigration court and reviewing the hearing recordings, I understood why. What started out as a family vacation to Mexico turned into a nightmarish two months of Arizona prison life.

Their documents provide insight not only into Mr. Danard's own case, but shed light on systemic problems that pervade the immigration courts and jails.........

Wow. Welcome to America. I had to skip through a lot of that because it was r e a l l y l o n g.

Didn't bother reading it - but who the heck in their right mind takes a vacation to Mexico with the current state of affairs there? Remember the couple from Hamilton a few years back who were murdered there while at their son's wedding? Nothihng could pay me to go there ever.

Anyway - I'm probably off topic and just ranting :bonk:

Long story short:

- Canadian male visits Mexico with wife by plane

- While in Mexico rescues two emaciated puppies and wants to take back to Canada. So buys a car with intent of selling car once back in Canada

- While passing through Mexico/US border they make HIM (not his wife) complete a visa application. He answers truthfully the question about arrests and a petty theft as a teen

- He is arrested at the US side of the border for being illegally in the US because the theft is a crime of moral turpitude (this makes no sense because he should have been denied entry, not arrested, that's the point of the story)

- He is effectively kidnapped (never told what he was charged with) and locked up by ICE in the US

- He eventually attends a hearing whether the charges are dropped and he will leave voluntarily, this means ICE lost the case

- ICE appeal the decision so they can "win" and he is locked up longer (30 days or so)

- Lots of lies, falsification of forms and other bad stuff by ICE and ICE lawyers

- He finally admit to the charge so that he can leave

- They hold him another 3 weeks all the while claiming he'll leave "soon"

- Eventually released and returns to Canada but it's a big screw up and the article is about how ICE lied and kidnapped him

I honestly don't get the allure. I don't like it there. at. all. And I can't say that about many places. lol

If you don't have fun in Mexico, you're not doing it right :P

LoL, it's usually quite easy to spot the Canadian tourists in Mexico though.

If you go to a resort, you're not going to be dealing with cartels. If you're driving across the U.S. / Mexico border and taking country roads yeah, you will, but not if you go to Acapulco, Merida, Mazatlan, Can Cun, or La Paz.

But I suppose I'm a bit jaded because I know Mexico quite well, and i've been mugged by a group of algerian 19 year olds in Paris

Are they the fluorescent ones? I thought those were the Brits. The Canadians would be the really happy polite ones. :hehe:

LoL, no, the German tourists are the transluscent ones. The British tourists are the ones piss drunk meandering from bar to bar. The Canadian tourists are the pale white ones wearing this sort of sandal (sometimes with socks :o)

The tell tale sign is the apology for something like not having exact change for a street vendor

The German tourists are the ones that run you over getting off the bus at the hotel reception desk and appear totally confused there is no cheese on the breakfast buffet in Mexico.
