Don't Say The Word "Gay" In Fun, Or You Might Be Labeled An Evil Bigot!!

The meaning of the word in that context is inherently pejorative. That's why it's dodgy.

You can find out for yourself what gay people think about that. It's essentially the soft face of bigotry. No this does not mean everyone who says "that electric car is gay" is a bigot, but the association is there. People need to be aware of the ideology behind their use of language.

So whats your conclusion? Its OK as long as people know the ideology behind it? Using the word doesn't make you a full blown bigot? Context matters but the use of the word trumps context?

Why would you deliberately use a word that relies on a subtext of a pejorative view of a specific group who are targeted as at best 'abnormal' and at worst criminally sinful? Why do you refrain from using n*gger as a descriptive word? Or, perhaps you don't? It may seem hilarious to describe something as 'gay' but what are you saying about it really? You are certainly not suggesting it's playful and fun, now are you? That a character in a play/movie/tv series might say such things and be allowed to to illustrate character is fine and dandy, but to use it as the definition of what the play/movie/tv series portrays is crass.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Your thread-title is misleading. I'm pretty sure you can continue to use "gay" as in "happy". Makes you sound like an old geezer, but go ahead...

No it's not. It's a bastardized word that continues to be bastardized. You can't first change the meaning of a word, then get mad when someone does the same or gives you ####### for it.

so using a word by its proper definition makes you look like an old geezer?

Yeah, and typing things like 'r u gunna b @ th3 store b4 me?" makes me look cool and hip, eh?

Because to me it means something ridiculous or stupid. I do not associate it to gay people in any way shape or form. I dont say n*gger for the same I reason I dont say f*ggot. Thats a better comparison, 9 out of 10 times when those words are said you know where that person is coming from and its usually meant to hurt and offend people.

Language is evolving and changing all the time. That's just a fact. There are also words with multiple meanings.

And oftentimes, word fall out of usage.

Oh, and I don't text or use that kind of abbreviated language.

No. It means that the meaning of the word doesn't change, regardless of your intent.

I didn't know Anderson Cooper was gay. Where have I been? :bonk:

I think it should be pointed out that using "gay" as a synonym for "weird" or "silly" is not offensive to all gays. Some gay people use it themselves. But in that way, I suppose it's kind of like the N-word, since I myself wouldn't feel comfortable using it in that context in front of a gay person.

I think that's the test. Would you use gay to mean weird in a conversation with a homosexual? Would you use "retard" in a conversation with a mentally retarded person? If not, then why would you be surprised that they might find it offensive to hear it in a movie?

People have a right to be offended by it and make a big deal about it and encourage people to consider how the use of the word might impact others. People also have a right to not go see that movie. Moviemakers have a right to pull the scene if they forsee it negatively impacting their bottom line. This doesn't mean that any of these things have to occur, but public opinion does make a difference, even when you think it shouldn't because the public are libertal fukctard cry-babies.

See, that's the thing here. the F-word = The N-Word for homosexuals. Gay does not. Gay is a 'nice' term to use instead of homosexual. Just as 'straight' is a 'nice' word for Heterosexual people.... Straight = normal. Gay = abnormal in almost any definitive use.. It's why gay people call straight people "breeders" as a type of "N-word" which fails miserably... but they try it...

I have no idea what you just said.

When children my son's age say something is 'gay' they don't mean simply weird, the word has a much more negative connotation, it is something slightly unpleasant, definitely inferior and not something they would want to be associated with in any way - something they do not like, don't think is good enough, etc etc. 'Gay' in this sense is pejorative, not 'nice' at all.

No. It means that the meaning of the use of the word doesn't change, regardless of your intent. If you're using "gay" in a pejorative sense you are perpetuating prejudice, whether you realise it or not.

Wow, that is so delusional and just, plain wrong.
