Baltimore city police have said they believe that Hispanics are being targeted for violence in the city, and one Hispanic organization is speaking out on the issue, saying it is true for a number of reasons.

Baltimore police continue to investigate a number of violent crimes against Hispanics that have happened mostly in the upper Fells Point area of the city.

CASA de Maryland in the 2400 block of East Fayette Street is near to where a number of the attacks have occurred. The organization is warning Hispanic workers and families that there is a real problem that makes them easy targets.

In one incident this weekend, 51-year-old Martin Reyes was beaten to death. Police classified his slaying as a hate crime, saying the suspect in the case, 19-year-old Jermaine Holley, said he hated Hispanics.

Another incident involved the robbery and shooting of a Hispanic man in the 100 block of North Linwood Avenue earlier this month. The man died on Saturday. Police said a witness described the shooter as a 13-year-old girl who police are still trying to identify.

"This summer, we've seen a much higher number of incidents, especially in the neighborhood around upper Fells Point and Patterson Park, and a number of community members are being victimized," said Elizabeth Alex, the lead organizers of CASA de Maryland.

She said every summer they see a spike in robberies and assaults on Hispanics, but this year is out of control. She said the problem is that most Latinos in the area carry cash home from their jobs, which they leave late at night, making them vulnerable targets.

Alex said there is also fear among the workers and families using CASA de Maryland because they are not sure where the city and the Police Department stand on immigration and whether a call to police could mean deportation.

"There still isn't a formal rule or written policy that says what circumstances police could call immigration, so as a result, people are afraid. People are scared," she said.

WBAL-TV 11 News contacted the mayor's office concerning immigration and reporting crimes in the city, and that office referred 11 News to the Police Department.

A police representatives said, "These crimes in the southeast district targeting Hispanics are not immigration issues. The Baltimore Police Department urges the community to come forward with vital information to prevent further harm. Immigration is a federal issue."

CASA de Maryland said it has been getting a number of calls of support from black leaders in the community to try to work together to make the neighborhood safer.

The organization is planning a rally and information session later this week and this Sunday.

you have to know baltimore to know that this is black on hispanic (hate) crimes because the media won't say it. i've read several news articles on this, however none of them will say it is blacks that are targeting hispanics. sad because if it were white people targeting hispanics, "white" would be in capitals. black leaders will give lip service to the hispanic community, but nothing else guaranteed - black people own baltimore.

Strange you point this out in Bold. I find the opposite to be quite true where I am. Any time a Black commits a crime here, their name, face, race, etc. When it is someone White, you would never know unless you look at the location because it is concealed. It seems like instead of posting an article of interest, you are attempting to indirectly (or maybe directly) make this a racial issue. Crime of any type by ANYONE against any race is horrible. Who cares who commits it.

I thought it was interesting the term "hate crime" was not even used. As you pointed out... just try to imagine a group of whites targeting Blacks of Latinos then try to imagine it noit being a huge story.

And if we did have a group of whites attacking Latinos..... who would be to blame... Rush, Beck, and the usual.

When Blacks do it.... "There are deeper social things at play."

LOL - it is a racial issue. what part of "blacks targeting hispanics" do you not get? the baltimore article doesn't say "blacks targeting hispanics" but if you know baltimore, you know it is blacks. heck, simply because the article doesn't say "whites" means it is blacks. this isn't as much about crime as it is about hate-crime directed at a certain race.

i'm from the area. my tenant (i still have a house there) who is a forman on a construction crew told me his entire crew is hispanic. i guess there is some resentment in baltimore and NY.

and i bolded my comment to separate it from the article - that isn't strange.

Here is another one for you in NY:

NEW YORK (AP) — When Rodolfo Olmedo was dragged down by a group of men shouting anti-Mexican epithets and bashed over the head with a wooden stick on the street outside his home, he instinctively covered his face to keep from getting disfigured. Blood filled his mouth.

"I wanted to scream, but I couldn't because of the beating they were giving me," said the 25-year-old baker. Nearly five months later, he is still taking pain medications for his head injuries.

Recorded by a store's surveillance camera, the assault was the first of 11 suspected anti-Hispanic bias attacks in a Staten Island neighborhood, re-igniting years-old tensions between blacks and Hispanics in New York City's most remote borough.

Residents of Port Richmond — where an influx of newcomers from Latin America over the past decade has transformed the community — alternately blame the attacks on the economy, unemployment and the debate over Arizona's immigration law.

And although most of the suspects were described as young black men and investigated for bias crimes, a grand jury has indicted only one of seven people arrested on a hate-crime charge.

But Isaias Lozano, a day laborer, said he knows why he was attacked and robbed in December by "morenos" — the Spanish word he uses to describe his black neighbors.

"They hate us because we're Mexicans," he said while sitting at El Centro del Inmigrante, a center for immigrant day workers. "They aren't robbing just anybody."

Across the United States, the immigration debate plays out in suspicion of outsiders and sometimes escalates into violence. Port Richmond, tucked in a corner of New York City that most visitors never see, is wrestling with the perennial question of how people from different backgrounds can live together and get along.

Some community leaders here blame the attacks on hoodlums preying on day laborers, who are perceived as easy targets because they often carry cash home from work. Others say the Arizona law is stirring up a climate of intolerance, even these thousands of miles away.

How can you have a post-racial society when all Democrats want to talk about it:

-The Black Community

-The Latino Community

-The Gay Community

-The Muslim Community

-The Asian Community

-etc...

When really we should all just be treated as "Americans."

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Bingo! Since I moved to the US, not a week goes by when one of the above is shoved in my face. Yet the same people doing the shoving, turn around and claim they want equality.

What I have discovered is that all is well to identity people based on such grouping, when it's positive in nature. Just do not dare do it and mention any of the groups potential downsides. The catch 22 is you cannot mention the positives of any majority group like Caucasians, as that is just racist. Ironically though, you can mention the negatives of them, as that is funny.

For example:

"Aussies are doing well". Aussies are Caucasian and a majority in their country, wha wha racist! racist!

"Aussies are still convict Dundees", ha ha like totally funny.

Where? if on this portal, maybe you should focus on yer residential community, instead?

I will not say there is not some white dude doing what you say.

but the perception is this IF EVERY D&&%% law provides equal rights to every one regardless of what minority group they belong too or not, then why must we continue to pad test scores, have hiring quotas etc.

Any Minority group going around all day crying that they need more rights when every law of the land provides equal rights to all USC, if not more to those minority groups; To those USC minotrities crying for more that is truly WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! :crying:

If you are descriminated against in some way come talk to me and I will fight by your side for your rights to be protected and for you to be treated equally as an American.

Absolutely not

Where in what I wrote gives a free pass to someone discriminating against another?

Simply stated that there are as many minorities whinning in an effort to gain more than equality as there is white people griping about being discriminated against becasue they are white.
