it appears that i will soon have a decision to make.

last year, due to reduction in orders of capital equipment related to the recession, i was given an opportunity to take a sabattical that included very generous terms. i decided to take the time and use it to re-train in a new field. my studies have been enjoyable, and i am a 4.0 to date, with ease. final goal is RNP, and acheivable on basis of current reserves and benefits with an annual buget around 50K$. annual fixed expenses are around 22K$.

last week a friend in china was approached by a procurement agent representing a significant general contractor. this agent is about to place an order with the chinese foundry/machining shop at which i was camped from 2004-2009. the intended order includes objects of a scale and design closely mocking recent projects i oversaw production of, the scale of which is very uncommon in the industry, and can only be produced at 3-4 vendors worldwide. there are very few quality engineers that have ridden horses like this. none other than me have done so at this particular vendor, and i was widely known as the "old man" there.

on a recent visit to the vendor the agent, whom i had met, noticed that i was no longer on site and asked after me. the chinese VGM of export division is a personal friend of mine and referred them to an aussie who is also a close personal friend. the aussie has been in contact with me, and is meeting with the agent on wednesday. i have indicated to the aussie that i am somewhat available, if the price is right. direct discussions should commence within a week or so. at the moment, it looks like mid range six figures is expected, with a 4 year duration. i should be able to steal my old quality team of chinese engineers from their current employ.

i am 46, and was looking to be active in the new career within 4 years. delaying the process would be financially empowering, but would postpone entry into the new career until i was 54 or so. the question is, if in similar situation, would you take the contract and build the war chest, or would you continue on present course and enter the new field with depleted reserves?

What would i do? take the contract. Negotiate a great deal. Save the stash. Entering a new career field either now or at 54 is going to be difficult. You are going to be competing with recent, younger ( read cheaper) grads.

Go with what you know. Take the stash. Invest wisely and retire early and do new career later as a hobby :).

But that's just me- only you know what's right for you and what risk you are prepared to take.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I'd say take the offer, if it materializes, and IF they swing a valid work visa for you.

Sorry, I've no idea what an 'RNP' is, but if it's in nursing, hey - those jobs never go away, regardless of the age.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

an aussie who is also a close personal friend.

You're not talking about that dude that always posts here on VJ, are you? The "Guns are bad, Australia is better than US" guy?

looks like mid range six figures is expected, with a 4 year duration.

I'm wondering why you couldn't retire on that alone, especially if living in China for a while.

would you take the contract and build the war chest, or would you continue on present course and enter the new field with depleted reserves?

There's no way I'd turn down any opportunity to make more money right now.

Plus, you're a rock star at any age in China. Are you a rock star as a 50y/o RNP here in the States?

1. I like "ribonucleoprotein" the best, si man.

2. I agree with all the others that you should jump at this financial opportunity NOW, after negotiating the best deal that you can regarding all details. This is quite an enviable situation, si man. Just don't leave VJ, no man, in the process.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I'm sure once he's in China we can arrange for the Chinese authorities to ban VJ.
