When it comes to buying an engagement ring for your fiancee, does it really matter more if it's a diamond or any other stone? How important is the moment of the proposal compared to the type of engagement ring chosen? Just curious to know your opinion.

For some of you that posted thinking I was the fiance... I am the fiancee(Sunshine doesn't quite fit a man username )) and I am already engaged. I just wanted to know how would you choose your engagement ring. If it's the moment that matters or the ring.

I don't have an engagement ring, I never wanted one. I like the classic look of a simple gold band around my finger. It also perfectly matches the simple gold band around my husband's finger

I've always hinted at the fact that I didn't want a diamond ring because it's too expensive and I didn't want him to spend all that money. I said I like saphires just fine. So he secretly borrowed one of my rings one day and bought me a saphire engagement ring with two little diamonds on either side of it. Looks absolutely beautiful.. probably about a third of the price of what it would have been if the center stone were diamond. The most adorable thing was that he was able to figure out what kind of design/style I would like, all by himself

Had an engagement ring with a big honking diamond for the first marriage. Stupid thing was always in the way, and really, we could have used that money for something else (like food, rent, ... when it turned out he was useless in addition to being a jerk and I had the only paycheque). This marriage, no engagement ring. Just the matching wedding bands. It is the marriage relationship that counts, not the jewelery.
