I hope that somebody can help me with this question. My English spouse passed away last week, we had been married for over 3.5 years and he had his permanent resident card. We had him cremated and brought his ashes brought home to England to be buried there. His family in England had queried officials over there about notification/registering his death there but was told that as long as his death was on record here in the U.S. that would suffice. Is this correct? Or should I notify the British Embassy here? Also, do I need to notify Immigration as he was a permanent resident?

It wouldn't hurt anything to notify both the British Embassy as well as USCIS. He may have been registered with the Embassy, and USCIS can update his file so you won't receive mail to him in the future with respect to renewing a green card or such.

you should have received a death certificate certified by a county level court. you can get an original certified copy and send to USCIS, his family in UK, and to the british embassy.

The embassy is responsible for representing the home country abroad

and handling major diplomatic issues, such as preserving the rights of citizens abroad.

The ambassador is the highest official in the embassy and acting as the chief diplomat

and spokesperson for the home government. Ambassadors are typically appointed by

the highest level of the home government. In the United States, ambassadors are

appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

However,

Consulates (and their chief diplomat, the consul) handle minor diplomatic issues

like issuing visas, aiding in trade relationships, and taking care of migrants, tourists, and expatriates.

You need to contact the nearest British Consular office.
