Hey,

I was curious if anyone has bought and used Rosetta Stone to learn your spouses native language? If so, how successful was it? For the full course to learn Hindi it is going to cost me around $400... My husband says he will teach me once he is here, But, even though I have learned some key phrases over the last couple of years, I am wanting to have a better understanding of the language. Is there another program out there cheaper but still as successful? I am a little learning challenged :P I am open to suggestions and ideas

It is a great program, and $400 is pretty cheap, usually it's much more than that. There are ways to get it for far less money though, but I cannot post it here for fear of catching a suspension.

I started using it to learn Dutch. However, although it is very useful, for me, it is MUCH more helpful once you can use the phrases it teaches you everyday.

It starts with the basics and you can hear the phrases, and see the associated pictures. It also has a feature for you to practice saying the words, and it is suppose to help you learn to pronounce the more difficult words (in Dutch there are many!) properly, but for me, that feature doesn't seem to work too well. Might be my microphone though. Anyway, I think it is a great program, but better used in conjunction while learning from a live source that you can practice with everyday.

Have fun learning!

My husband was born in India but his family moved to NYC when he was three years old. Although he rarely visits India, he speaks Hindi in American accent when his mom calls him up. He sounds sooooo sexy!

Try borrowing some free CDs and books from your public library. It's for free but I don't know how easy or effective the learning will be.

Thanks everyone!! I am looking for a new hobby... so I think this will be right up my alley. I have searched ebay for months now and never have seen it for Hindi :( I dont mind paying the money as long as it is successful, I can practice with my husband and friends everyday... and then hopefully when I go back to india for his interview I can impress my Mother-in-law... Lets see, after I buy it and have studied it for a couple of months I will post back and let everyone know what I think

I would suggest also looking at the Internet Tutor sites. You can do 1 hour lessons for about $10 an hour and you will be speaking with a native speaker. They can help reinforce things and help guide you.

Best of luck.

I think Learn 10 also does Hindi. I signed up for it on facebook and it sends me 10 words a day for free. There is a paid section but I have never needed to use it.

Don't know about Hindi, but I am using it for Spanish and I find it very good. I am still at the beginning though, but I definitely recommend it. I was dreaming Spanish words last night :D
