Catchy tune

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

When the US decided to take control of Puerto Rico and turn it into a colony (as they also tried to do with Cuba) they pretty much adapted Spanish as another official language, even if they didn't want to.

So even if they remove everything that's translated as far as signs, etc... every SINGLE government form that we have has to be in both languages and every single government office has to have some bilingual employees.

So blame the gov't.

I think it's pretty funny actually.

I suppose there's no official language in America, and though this probably isn't a popular opinion, I think the truth is if you decide to move to a country whose primary language isn't yours, it's worth the effort to learn the language. Clearly I'm all for immigration, but what's wrong with learning to speak the primary language fluently? If I emigrate to Germany I will be expected to learn German if I want to become a citizen...

I totally agree.

What I don't like is when people make a great effort to learn & speak English (like my husband), pay for schooling, practice with people etc. and people don't see the effort they just see the fact that his accent is thick or that sometimes he can't understand what they say.

Of course, I mean it is kinda a sink or swim scenario for most that come here. But, there is no official language of the US. So..... To tell someone to speak English or get out is kind of silly since there is no established official language. The US is on the record for recognizing both English and Spanish, So it doesn't really bother me.

Oh it doesn't bother me, per se. I have a different perspective maybe since I'm a teacher?

I agree, Susita about the accent thing though. There are some very VERY judgmental people who hear an accent and immediately tune out. My favorite is when people yell in English as though the person is deaf, rather than a non-native speaker

I definitely don't think people should 'speak English or get out' however I do think more of an effort should be made on the part of immigrants to learn English -- especially if they are going to be working in the public sector.

I think German is like the fifth most spoken language in the US or something too...
