WooooHoooo....im #45....and Kat....i wonder why naperville is #2....not anything against it, but why is it so high?

I don't know officially why. I do know the public schools are considered some of the best in the nation, and the crime rate is pretty low. A few years ago they are voted the best place with a population of over 100,000 to raise your children.

Personally, it's a fairly expensive place to live but I've lived her since 97 and although Ive come across people that say those living here are very snooty I myself have not experienced that.

So far as crime goes I do feel safe here, and I've always felt my daughter was reasonably safe here. I remember when we first moved here and she would insist on walking our dog by herself everyday. She was only 7 and we live in an apartment complex so her route was restricted to only areas where I could watch her from home as she did this. What I found was it didn't take long before she had a good many other adults watching out for her as she went too, not in a bad way....in a positive way helping to keep her safe and allow (the cute little girl to walk her little doggie) She actualy had a group that would bring their dogs out to walk with her.

A couple of years ago I went through some very difficult times financially. They have a local organization run by volunteers mainly through various churches in the area called Naperville Cares. I went to them to see if they could assist me in any way and they helped me with my rent, and utilities. When my car broke down they gave me names of other volunteers to help with low cost car repairs and at christmas they designated my household as one they would help. When they told me I expected hand me downs in good shape etc but that didn't matter because I couldn't afford Christmas. On Christmas morning when my daughter and I sat down and shared our Christmas with the gifts they had donated I couldn't help but cry my eyes out. They had given us over $1000 worth of NEW things. Clothes for my daughter, video games, treats, makeup, gift cards....etc. and since they knew I was a geek I got 2 best buy gift cards!

I don't know why they rated it number 2 but my experiences with Naperville and the people who live here are extremely positive.

quality of public schools,

There are quality public schools??

:P

Yes. Home school is good if you want to raise a social retard.

I didn't say I am an advocate of homeschooling...however I am saying that the alternative to a bad school system is homeschooling, if moving isn't feasible...but as a temporary alternative only. Oh yes...there are private schools too.

I'm close to the #4.

But I would much prefer to live in/near #'s 11 and 15

And ####### is it that there are several places in CA on the list? :ranting:

GA is a far better state than CA (I've actually lived in GA; visits to CA have always proved high-stress).

I am against homeschooling. Not in principle, but because too many nutcases (yes you know I am talking about you) would rather have their kids learn what they want them to learn, not what they should learn.

LMAO

The beauty of standardised education - in the UK, most home-schooled kids still take GCSEs (and most go on to a further ed. institution for 16-18) so they're still learning standard stuff.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

12 out of the top 25 safest places to live are in New Jersey.

I knew there was a reason I liked living here :)

Well, they list cities, not just 'places'. Their polls are totally flawed! I live the in the state capitol city (the smallest in the country. I don't lock my house...I don't even know where the door key is. I don't lock the car whever I go in VT. How safe is that?

I know. I miss VT. Everyone thinks I am crazy when I go back home and am always locking things up and don't leave the keys in the car. They tell me I have been in FL too long!

P.S. Have you been inside the Statehouse in Montpelier? It is stunning. It is supposed to be among the best in that nation.

I can't believe Livermore, CA made that list, it was 114 degrees there yesterday!

Sugar Land, TX? Oh pleeeeez! It is a hotbed of consumer Yuppyism. Right up CNN Money's alley. A good reason not to put a lot of faith in these "best of" lists.

Not being one of the beautiful people...I'm not impressed!

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
