I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what type of insect this is. I wasn't able to get the best pictures...

I never saw anything quite like this before.

Might be some kind of tick.

Thanks! There were some interesting pics on those links. I tried to use the ID link, but the bug flew off, and I don't know the answers to some of the questions. I don't think it's a tick - I think ticks are flat, right? This had a body like a hopper or katydid - tall and thin, not wide. I found it in my kitchen, on the rim of my teacup - I thought it was some tea leaves or something at first. Yes, in PA - southeast part. I showed it to my kids and husband, and we got a few pictures. I was making dinner, though, and walked away from it. My son was following it, but it suddenly flew away, and he didn't see where it went. Oh well.

I tried googling both katydid and treehopper. My best guess is that it's some kind of treehopper.

Thanks!

I have seen it before but not sure. I think it is a moth or butterfly leafwing. Here is a pic of one but there are others that have different wing colors and shapes.

See, I should've been more patient before posting - I found it! It looks like a Smiliine Treehopper (Entylia carinata) that apparently decided to travel - it says they're found in West Virginia.

Thanks again!

Methinks you're right!

I grew up in WV, but don't recall ever seeing one. WV has some pretty cool flora and fauna.

Thanks for being lazy! Our friend, Mr. or Ms. Entylia Carinata is a great example of the wonder of nature and of natural selection IMHO.

There is close to a million different kinds of insects discovered so far, good luck in your search. Had to work near a swamp yesterday, don't know why my state is trying to protect wet lands. Little b@stards were everywhere, that's what I call them, little b@stards. Can also plug up your condenser and radiator fins causing car problems with excessive refrigerant pressures and engine overheating. But they must serve a purpose besides Lyme disease, heartworm, and malaria, but have to protect those wetlands. Man, did that shower feel good last night.

it is the common 'stink bug' common in the south

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I never get close enough to the creatures to identify what they are

Does this mean tent camping is out for you? What about just using a sleeping bag?

Trying to identify bugs/insects online is hard... I saw a monsterous insect (I was pretty sure it was an insect when I saw it) that looked like some kind of evil flying spider, and large... when I first saw it (because it moved when I got a little too close for it's comfort) I thought it was a missouri tarantula (non-fuzzy and basically like an extra big version of a typical house spider...) but then closer inspection revealed it wasn't... but was creepy and looked like it had wings... I took pictures... from a safe distance... I mean this crazy giant spider monster thing potentially had wings, or might be able to jump or whatever, it was about the size of a fist...

Someone from my office thought it might be a stink bug of some sort and through that I accidently found what it really was... a wheel bug, turns out that even though it's not a spider, you still wouldn't want one to bite you. I saw it again the next day (I guess they are somewhat territorial or maybe that one just had a nice camping spot) and it didn't look quite as big... maybe it wasn't the same one... here is a pic that gives you some idea of the horrors that creep around missouri... Wheel-bug-2.jpg

The one I saw had a shorter body, the image doesn't resemble a spider as much as the one I saw. Even in places where these bugs are common they are apparently not usually seen. The photo's I took of one were pretty blurry, so I found a stock image instead...
