No green card yet!!!

hi all,

I've entered USA almost 2 months ago and still no greencard in the mail, i even didn't recieve the welcome letter ...i'm really confused and don't know what to do...i don't know if it took time because the documents on the brown envelope the consulate gave me were not mine and they are simply waiting to get the documents before sending the greencard...

please help

have you filed to adjust status from your CR-1/IR-1 visa to Permanent resident? Have you sent the I-485 yet? if you havent then there will be no green card come in the mail for you. And the brown envelope the consulate gave you was your visa, the Immigration officer at the POE took it because it belong to them.

You need to start to file for your Adjustment of Status, go to FORUM and all the information is there.

SummerSurf - did something change recently? If a spouse comes to the USA on a CR-1/IR-1 visa, there is no need to file the I-485 AOS package. Unless you can tell me that it changed up around the 15th of September, 2009, then I gotta tell ya - you're wrong - NO I-485 required - as any CR-1/IR-1 visa holder is sent the card, from USCIS, within 45 days of the POE date, automatically.

Princess In Love - I suggest you set up an INFOPASS appointment, and inquire. Is there ANY possibility that the last address used by your US spouse is NOT the address you are living at now? If that's the case, then is quite possible that USCIS sent the card to this 'last known address'. A greencard is NEVER forwarded, so if he set up USPS forwarding instructions, you'll never receive the greencard.

So the INFOPASS would be the smartest move, its been 2 months so you better schedule an INFOPASS

Ya, You should get an INFOPASS appointment set up TONIGHT, online, for this upcoming week. They can do a coupla things for you:

1. check status of card production status

2. handle (properly ) the change of address - but I suggest you hold off on this a bit, as its troublesome (at this stage ) to guarentee the new address will 'take' in time prior to the card produciton.

3. give you an I-551 stamp in your passport with a duration of one year (if you didn't get one at POE ). This stamp acts in lieu of a physical green card.

Also - before you MOVE, talk to you landlord - tell him/her to WATCH OUT for your green card, if it arrives after you leave - and to FORWARD it to you.

If you don't get the GC before you move, I suggest DO NOT use USPS forwarding instructions, as the USPS WILL NOT FORWARD a GC. For all of your other correspondence and utilites, is easy to call them and let them know your new address, without enrolling in USPS forwarding.

Now, with all that said, it IS possible that you can check the status of your case with a phone call to DOS, get a human, ask where the card was sent. If it's already been sent, check the address that they have over the telephone.

Have you got your SSN number? I got that pretty quickly in the mail, but the physical greencard took three months (see my timeline).

I believe u need to contact the USCIS... I arrived here in USA on Sept. 4, 2009, luckily, got my SSN now and the welcome letter... and hoping for my green card soon!

I received three welcome letter, looks funny yes it is all of them have same thing but different dates. but I got my green card after 2 and half months. I had to apply for SSN though. Even though i checked on my form

I'm thinking your 'journey' got all screwed up after POE because you weren't carrying YOUR casefile from the Embassy.

Hopefully, by now, it's all squared away, yes?

Yes, that's probably the source of the delay. Certainly and infopass appointment won't hurt but they WOULD wait for the correct documents. If you had somebody else's documents, then they have yours and won't know it until they arrive at a POE which could be up to six months from visa issue. Fortunately, your I-551 stamp serves as a temporary card.
