hi all,

it's my first day back in the classroom tomorrow and i have to teach these college kids about gender roles & Shakespeare... was thinking to include some images & music to get them thinking... but i'm NOT in the Bronx anymore, where basically you can say anything in a classroom.

do you think these images would be offensive to your everyday, average 18-20 year-old?

thoughts please?

and thanks for your help!

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

The only thing I would be worried about is the demographics of your audience. I had a mixed demographic in my classes with a majority of Koreans. It is "sexy" in much of Asia for boys to be effeminate and there is nothing uncomfortable among Koreans about boys holding hands, stroking each others' faces, etc. But our Western kids were very uncomfortable with these practices. If I had shown that first picture to my kids, there would have been comments and giggles. But I was teaching a much younger audience than you will be teaching. And regardless, the point would have come up. Or maybe not. Maybe it would have gone over my students' heads without the picture of Asian boys.

I suggest you ask your direct supervisor to approve the images so it does not "blow up" on you. Once approved follow up with an email with the photos attached. Maybe an informal poll on visajourney is not representative of your community standards. An alternative is to ask the students to provide their own images. Problem solved.

Most college kids have seen of plenty of stuff more offensive than those images on the Internet. Is the entire class on gender roles in Shakespeare? If that's the case it is odd as Shakespeare didn't have females playing female roles, right?

Thanks all, for taking a look.

Good point about the picture of the Asian men... i didn't see it that way, but glad you brought it to my attention. The class is tomorrow so doubt i'll have any time to get it approved, but something to think about for next time...

If that's the case it is odd as Shakespeare didn't have females playing female roles, right?

Indeed, Alien! Yes, that's what i'm supposed to talk about tomorrow... the irony of men playing women who sometimes play men... and what that means, blah blah blah...

I find the images disturbing, and that makes it interesting. The mind plays tricks, seeing a convincing female image, yet knowing the model/actor is male. Why should that be as disturbing, as say, an actor normally of one political idealogy, playing the role of another idealogy, or an actor of one nationality or ethic group, playing another?

Acting is an illusion, so one has to wonder, how much the image we recognize as female, is also an illusion.
