Hi everyone,

Since it looks like there is not much action in terms of NOA2 for those of us at CSC I wanted to post a general question to all: How much do you spend on phone bills per month? I sometimes think that I am overdoing it, but then if I don't talk to my fiancée in Nicaragua then we don't have much of a relationship do we? What a horrible catch 22!!! It got so bad for me that I decided to get Voice over internet protocol (VOIP). To those of you who don't that is basically using your regular phone but connecting through the internet. It does save me money (theoretically), but because the per minute price is so much lower I talk for longer periods of time and in the end I end up spending aobut $400 per month. :P Anyone else in the same boat.

Oh and by the way I am calling her cell phone and she can't really call me because it is too costly for her. There are about 2 or 3 phone companies down there and, obviously, with less competition they can charge anything they want.

I am in the same boat as you..Astro...I am quite tempted to do the VOIP thing but I still resort to the calling card way..which averages me about 300 dollars a month since I am calling his cell phone..He doesnt have a land line or no internet at his apartment in Cyprus......Sucks that we are in this predicament and there are days where I get so annoyed with the network connection, the whole madness surrounded by international calls but I just keep reminding myself that this temporary and all sky-high phone bills are worth it for the one i love! Yes, I am spending quite the amount too for phone calls. I switched over to mostly calling on the computer to Tanja's home phone, using Skype (www.skype.com). It works really well and is much less expensive than my land line or cell provider rates. I think one month I hit over 500.00 in phone charges before switching. Sometimes you just need to talk... =)

yes, we are lucky in our US/Canada relationships. Though, my phone bill has been roughly $50 - 60 per month for the past 5 years because of it. He recently got a plan similar to yours, so I let him do all the calling now. $5 flat monthly fee for calls to Canada!

I do often think of you guys with more distant sweethearts though - it can be very expensive!

I actually am doing pretty well with the phone call situation now...

years of trying to find out what was cheaper.

Liked Skype but had problems with the backfeed I guess.

Still use it but it is rare.

I think I pay under $.02 a minute to call the UK right now. Thus far...and I knock on wood...we haven't had a problem.

Online phone cards...umm mine in particular comes from www.masterbell.com

got the info a few months ago from someone here! :)

Gives really low rates, and you might spend 10 or 20 dollars a week? the reception is very good.

I am the non-usc, and I use to call my family in Venezuela EVERYDAY!!!

20 dollars gives me 24 hours or so. I think it's a pretty darn good deal.

I use www.dynasky.com and use their e-card for my calls to China. Using a local access number, the rate for me to call China is 0.02/minute! Two cents a minute! For twenty dollars I can afford to homestead on the phone with my lady and not worry about it! I have always had very good connections and it works like a charm!

Oh, I almost forgot, we also use Yahoo! IM as we both have webcams and headsets. We can text, use voice, and see each other all at the same time. It really makes us feel much closer when we can actually see other's expressions! Get webcams, they're GREAT!

How can you turn an international call to a local call?

Simply by getting them a local phone number! It would be just as if he/she is right next door.

If anyone would like to learn how, feel free to email me: afdomaoan@aol.com
