some random guy said if you leave america for more than six months for upto a year you are no more eligible for applying citizenship??

Yes - sort of.

One of the requirements is:

• Have a period of continuous residence and physical presence in

the United States; and

Suggest you read this Guide.

You can get the exact timing required.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

ok i understand that the time that one spends outside the US is subtracted.

but he told me that if you stay out if usa for more than 6 months on green card and later return within one year you can never become a US citizen no matter how long you stay in USA.you will have to live with green card all your life.

i dont think its ture??

That is definitely not true!

The confusion may stem from this: some people have reported problems coming back into the country when staying out more than 6 months, because the border agents said by staying out more than 6 months at a time, they gave up their permanent residency in the USA.

Correct - it will be good for 2 years, then you must return to the US to re-affirm your LPR status.

File Form I-131, Application for a Travel Document, to apply for a re-entry permit. A re-entry permit is valid for up to 2 years and is proof that you are returning from a temporary visit abroad. You may show the re-entry permit at a port of entry instead of a returning resident visa or a Permanent Resident Card.
