Does anyone feel that it would be best to hire a lawyer? How has it been doing this on your own? I am not ready to get one yet. but i am trying to inform myself with what is the best thing to do. So i am just trying to ask questions and see what i can find out.

You will not find many here that will suggest you hire a lawyer, unless you want to spend money needlessly and usually make the process longer.

I'm doing it all by myself and have had no problems. Ready the Guides, Update your timeline.

We did not hire a lawyer during my K-1. We did it on our own and it went fine. Got approved after 3 months from filing. Things went smoothly and now I'm in the States. If you feel like hiring a lawyer, it's up to you but for practical reason try to do it on your own. Good Luck

Depends on your case. Most of the forms you can pretty easily fill out yourself. This site has great guides to walk you through the major forms you will file with USCIS. You didn't mention if you were looking at K-1 or K-3...etc.

So, to answer your question, No. you do not need a lawyer to do this. But, if you have certain issues that may present a problem (i.e.) Overstaying a visitor visa, deportation, serious criminal histories, etc.... you might want to consider an immigration attorney.

IMOP you know your information the best and a lawyer will charge exuberant prices to fill out relativity easy forms. Again, this is my own opinion. But I have read quite a few stories here that some lawyers have even filed their clients forms incorrectly and created a longer more difficult delay in the immigration process. It's really your call.

If you can read accurately, interpret literally, and follow instructions, you can complete the forms and compile the petition package yourself. However, before filing, it is an EXCELLENT idea to consult a qualified attorney who has dealt with family-based visas. This is because there may be circumstances surrounding your relationship that require you to provide extra information or to be alert to special requirements. If you can find an immigration attorney who previously served at a U.S. consulate overseas, dealing with visa interviews, it should be best of all. Please consider this amidst all of the advice here (sure to come) from everyone who will flatly say, "You do not need an attorney!" They cannot possibly know whether you need an attorney, and, frankly, perhaps you don't, either!

me and my fiance hired an immigration specialist that we found online, contacted some of his former clients and i found out he was legit so we hired him but it is a whooping $1000; it was not until like a week or so after we hired him that i learned of visajourney, we could've saved money but oh well, things happen for a reason

but i do think the posts here are right, you can file it on your own and if you have a lot of queries, then post them on forums or IM the experts

my lawyer made a mistake on my wifes name too much trouble

Also let them know that it's pretty much impossible to fire them and get your paperwork back. They can take their sweet time and there is no recourse. Check with the California bar association.

Please reread my post of 6:37 p.m. It's completely understandable how one would feel after being (as you say) f**cked by a lousy attorney. I like only the good ones. There are MANY bad ones out there.

How do you know if they are qualified? The guy I hired claimed to have 10k successful K-1 visas. The guy didn't have a clue. This guy was so incompetent he told me to make the check out to USCIS when it should have been made out to Dept. of State.

This is serious business. To put your future into someones hands that could care less is a big deal.
