My fiance wants to go to community college to study for real estate license after his arrival, i know there are many college classes offered in Real Estate. However, he would like to attend immediately or 1 month after his arrival.

We will get married immediately after his POE... but my question is... k1 visa--- I94 -- is that sufficient to prove his residence?

What tuition does he pay ? residence $20 a unit or non residence $190 a unit ?

Anyone know?

There is nothing specific listed on the course catalog. It does say that must be residence for 1 year, to have instate tuition. well -- what about K1 Visa... does that prove to be: domiciled ???

Not sure if any VJers had similar experience?

He will have to have 1 year residence in your state to qualify for in-state tuition. The in-state out state-fees typically apply to matriculated students earning credits towards a degree. I don't think Real estate license are restricted to matriculated students and may not be subject to the in-state out of state fee structure. Call and ask.

Also, a simple way to enroll in classes is to get a state ID (doesn't have to be a driver's license and ID will be fine) and present that at enrollment. In my personal experience some schools were completely confused when I brought up the K1 + pending Green Card. Some places (or staff) are simply more familiar with student based visa and apply the rules to the family based visas as well (On school wanted to charge us international student rates, instead of out-of state tuition).

In many states the residency of 1 year is waived if you marry a resident of that state. But you'll still need your NOA1.

I don't know anything about Cali, but in Indiana, if you have your green card, that's all it really takes to get in-state tuition and state aid if you landed in Indiana. There is no waiting period.

Here in Austin, you have to be a permanent resident or citizen to qualify for in district tuition.

contact EACH school as they may have different rerquirements! My school based my residency on my wifes residency. I had to bring a past State tax return for proof.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Definitely contact each school directly and ask them because they all have their own rules. In Colorado for example you will need either your work permit or green card to be considered a resident of the state. If you don't have either one, then most schools will charge out of state tuition.

I inquired at a community college here in North CA and was told they want proof of one year in CA to get resident rates. His passport stamp, or arrival plane ticket would be sufficient.

Might want to investigate private schools/organizations which help you study to pass the license exam.

Good Luck!!

Contact the school he wants to attend.

Each state has different rule for resident-rate for tuition since it is tax-money funded.

Also each school may have different rule, too.

Also certification/license may have different requirement. ^^
