My situation is I'm using a 4 yr. old crapolla AMD-based PC Club clone that will only work in cooperation with my no-name Digital Product PC Camera that is connected via USB on the motherboard.

2 weeks ago, I was able to broadcast my image to Leidys, but I couldn't see her. VJ needs to help me out, because I'm the Where Did She Go? guy. Any advice will be of major appreciation.

Oh, since its' an AMD-based piece of junk, I have a 15" box fan next to the open architecture to keep the AMD happy on days above 80 deg.F.

Why do you hate AMD?

I've been using exclusively AMD based machines for years. My current home machine is an Athlon X2, no complaints.

At work we have a combination of AMD and Intel based Sun servers, including the 16-core 4440 Opteron based servers: http://www.sun.com/servers/x64/x4440/ which rock.

Your problem is most likely due to drivers or configuration, or possibly the webcam device. Have you tested the webcam on a different machine? Or tested a different webcam on yours? You need to do some basic troubleshooting here.

New computer? would be my first step :)

Plus - problems on your end (driver related, or your cam) would not stop you from seeing her cam. I would suspect either her cam, or your messenger/cam program your using.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Something is wrong on her end. If she's not computer literate. You're in trouble. I'd like to help, but, after she checks her configuration. I need to know what she has or done.

I have had problems with the computer overheating since the warranty was up on this $800+ tower a few years ago. 3 yrs. ago when I went to Finland on vacation, I met a guy there who was doing video editing who also had the same problem, remedied with...a box fan.

Messenger did not allow me to transmit video, and Yahoo allowed me to communicate, but did not allow for me to transmit, nor view webcam on her end. The situation is a complete mess. My first step will be to send her to a friends house where he has everything configured properly. If things work on a reciprocal basis, then I know its the run-down Internet cafes she is patronizing.

Wrote a fun article for EE times years ago on what PC stands for, for one, Poor Cooling, computers are very ideal as an air purifier as all the debris in the environment ends up inside of the box. In designing high quality equipment for both the military and industrial applications, fans were out of the question as they circulate dirty air.

If you think the dust storms of the 30's were bad, should see what happens when I blow out the inside of my boxes. I did waste time with one of my computers using thermo conductivity techniques to carry the internal generated heat to the outside of the case to eliminate the fans, the wasted time was due to the fact, that computer was obsoleted within a year. Way too much work for nothing, just blow them out now. Notebooks are notorious for heat build up in that confined space.

Don't blame either Intel nor AMD for heat buildup, both of them have to say yes sir to Microsoft to stay in business and MS likes to change things every five minutes and neither design the computer case. Many make the mistake of upgrading the operating system when their chip set cannot even handle the latest greatest OS, that leads to all kinds of problems. Have to stick with the OS your computer came with, and when that OS becomes obsolete, so does your computer. And they do become obsolete quicker than you can shake a stick at. That's one way MS can stay in business, and you can write software where 2 plus 2 equals a zillion or whatever number you chose, no logic in this. Can also write software to render yahoo, google, Netscape, or any other none-MS company to be worthless if you have absolute control over the OS. MS loves to do this.

But that isn't the only problem, WWW stands for World Wide Web, but no such thing as a World, made up of over 200 separate countries, and any of those countries can block communication between any two countries. Was extremely frustrating trying to maintain communications with my fiancée. Recall going to bed many nights with zero contact, no computer, no phone service. But fortunately she worked for an American based company with an independent land line so could call me long enough to let me know she was still alive, but that was only on weekdays, I hated weekends with a passion.

Our major delays was with the good old dependable USCIS, kind of hated them as well. But time passes, painfully, but still passes and you finally can get together only to deal with the USCIS for another four years after that, that time passes too. I did give her the latest greatest computer in one of my visits to here and got one for myself, that helped a little. But when the lines get jammed, the webcam is worthless, can try communicating at 3:00 AM in the morning. That's when the hackers go to bed and before normal people wake up.

It's a trying time and those of us that have been through this are well aware of what you are going through. Thought about the old fashion HAM communications, but way too complicated for my wife and you have to be concerned about sunspot activity plus let the HAM world in on your personal communications.

Some of the problems are with the latest version Yahoo Messenger. For some reason, it does not like user mode, and only functions well in admin mode. I went back to version 8, and that resolved the problem. You can also try resetting your browser to default setting, and that will get rid of any conflicts with add-ons, and reset the queue.

Yahoo has no real support to speak of, so you are on your own.

Perhaps, my problem is with running Google Chrome and not Internet Explorer? Hmmm.

What do any of those issues have to do with AMD chips? If anything, perhaps, blame your chipset, motherboard, PC, OS, drivers. What does the CPU have do with it?

Can also write software to render yahoo, google, Netscape, or any other none-MS company to be worthless if you have absolute control over the OS.

Netscape?? Party like it's 1999....

Perhaps, my problem is with running Google Chrome and not Internet Explorer? Hmmm.

I use Firefox as my browser, on Vista Ubuntu (Linux) and Solaris. (Solaris at work, Vista + Ubuntu at home).

To voice-call with my honey, we use mainly Skype, though as a backup when Skype is flaky we'll revert to Yahoo messenger.

Your choice of browser should have no effect on your webcam/VOIP application.

PROBLEM SOLVED!! It had to do with Yahoo and not my computer. Everything was installed properly, it just took both ends functioning properly, and Leidys thankfully went to an Internet cafe with a functioning webcam.

Yes, the box fan is still in place, cooling the tower, but it has only be 70 degrees all day. Go figure.

Thanks again for everyone's help!!:dance:
