Hello all,

Just engaged march 30th! very excited but also frustrated with all this process. Just found this website and forums, so hoping its going to help out. Already have a few questions tho!

We can't really afford to get a lawyer, we are going to try to use " on base " immigration office for help but we aren't sure how much help it will be, if any. I'm a Canadian marrying and American Military Persons. If anyone has some insight on using base immigration office for help that would be great.

We are pretty frustrated with the papers and all the reading we have done and are still moderately confused on everything. We downloaded some very lengthy forms and information from another site before finding this one, and we payed for the other forms and information which isn't even half as clear as what I have read on here so far lol.

Oh, also can anyone throw me a link so I can find out how much money he needs to send with our first forms?

It's best to start by reading the Guides at the top of this page. 0h, and welcome to VJ!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

The common wisdom on this site is that unless you have a very complex situation, you should be able to do just fine without a lawyer. Most of us never hire a lawyer for our cases.

Your fiance being military should not be relevant. You'll go through the same filing process a civilian would go through.

The initial filing fee for a K1 is $455 US. This is submitted with the I-129F petition your fiance will be filing.

Good luck, and welcome to VJ!

Oh -- and congratulations on your engagement :)

Good for the doing fine without a lawyer part! I think personally I just need to write out my own list of everything that is needed to go in the K1 file so I can get a clear view of it rather than online webpage reading.

For sending it in I see that it talks about putting it in a "file" is that just like one of those paper folders we used to use in high school with the 3 hole punch on the side of it and the fold back clips and such to keep the papers organized?

Also for some reason I can't view any of the example letters.

Hi inky, and welcome. Yes, definitely read the guides at the top of the page and look at the checklist of information you'll need to gather. You can begin gathering "evidence" now so that when you are ready to file your papers you will have it all together. You'll also have a good idea of the timeline for receiving information.

Please do check out the Canadian section of the site too, under the different regions. You will find many Canadians (and non-Canadians) with helpful experience.

Good luck and congratulations on your engagement!

"Our Wedding Prayer"

Lord, help us to remember when we first met,and the strong love that grew between us.

To work the love into practical things so nothing can divide us

Grant us a Love that grows stronger with each passing year.

We ask for words both kind and loving

and for hearts always ready to ask forgiveness as well as to forgive.

Guide us to overcome every challenge

and keep our dreams pure to each other always.

Dear Lord,we put our marriage into Your hands.Amen

If your heart acquires strength, you will be able to remove blemishes from others without thinking evil of them.
