Consulate Review: Ghana
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 17, 2008
Embassy Review :

My fiance had his interview this morning. He got to the consulate at 7am, was given a number and was not called until 10am. He was asked for the DS 156K and his passport photos only, he paid the visa fee and had his fingerprints taken. Then he was told to sit until the CO called him over.

The CO called him over about 30 min later. He was asked questions like how we met, he was asked to talk about me, he asked about my parents and what they do and about my sisters. Then he asked for the I-134 and my tax returns from 2007. The CO glanced over my letter of employment but did not ask to keep it. He did not ask for my bank statements. Then he asked for our proof of relationship stuff. The CO said we had "overwhelming proof" but wanted to see pictures form 2006 (we only had some from my trip in 2007)and snail mail. He said that phone records do not prove that we talked (despite the fact that both our numbers are shown on the records).

My fiance explained to the CO that my purpose for Ghana was not to meet him. He explained that going to Ghana is something I do every year because I have family there. The only reason we met is because my aunt was having surgery and I went with her. He explained that, because it was just a chance meeting and I was not even aware of his existence at that point in time we did not take any pictures (I only saw him on and off for 4 days). It was only after I had come back tot he US that we decided to pursue a relationship (this is what I had put on our initial petition of proof of meeting in the last 2 years).

The CO also asked my fiance twice, at the beginning and end of the interview, when we planned to get married and he said July/August. The CO seemed to think that was a little too far out and said it would be better if the visa was issued closer to our intended wedding date. He asked my fiance what date in June would be best for him to come back and he picked June 2nd.

The CO said that was fine but to bring snail mail to our second appointment. He said that if we bring that we would be issued the visa. My fiance was very optimistic with everything and said the CO said if we bring the letters then he will be issued the visa

So, now we are waiting for another 2.5 months until we can go back and GET OUR VISA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NB: I am rating them a 3 because the CO was nice and my fiance did say the interview was smooth and it went well. I just wish they would have said 'Approved, but come back for the visa at a later date'.
Rating : Moderate

POE Review: JFK
Event Description
Entry Date : 2008-08-07
Embassy Review : We came through JFK together (around 5:30 PM)and were sent together through the "Visitors" line (ironically it was shorter than the "US Citizen" line. They took the brown sealed envelope and opened it and the customs official was asking me questions about why all my phone records were needed and I gave him a little tutorial on the K1 visa. He did not know how to process the K1 so we were sent to the waiting room. I asked him about the temp EAD and he had no clue about that. Total time in line: 20 minutes.

In the waiting room our file was at the front of the line but we were delayed because they were deporting someone (they actually questioned the individual and slapped cuffs on him right in front of us ). After that they called my fiance explained about the 90 days to get married, showed him his temp EAD and sent us on our way. If not for the poor dude getting deported we would have been out of there in 10 minutes. Total time waiting in the waiting room: 30 minutes.
Harassment Level : Low

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
