We aren't in the packing stage yet, but my husband and I would like to know about current luggage limits for international flights. When it's time to fly to the US, we'll be bringing one suitcsae each plus one carry-along bag each. Is it possible for us to bring a third suitcase? Are there restrictions? What are the fees that apply? What is the current standard? We don't have a lot to bring, but there are things we'd like to pack in a hardcase and bring with us, rather than using a freight service and then going through customs. Any advice please?

each individual carrier has there own rules and fees... you need to check out the websites of the carriers you may use

Check with your airline.

Flights to/from the US usually allow 2 x 50lb bags per passenger... however if you are transiting domestically after your POE please be aware that many internal flights have cut their checked bag allowance

yes, it depends on the airline, but most airlines allow 2 bags plus one carryon for each person for international flights.

Each airline has there own requirement. It is usually one or two check on pieces of luggage per person which can weight upto 50 pounds each. However if a piece of luggage is over the allowed weight some airlines will allow you to check it in if you pay an additional fee. I checked in one piece of overweight luggge and paid 50 dollars.

I was allowed only one carryon item. Usually there is a limit to the size of the carry on item as well.

But, of course check with your airline to see how many pieces of luggage each person can check in and the allowed weight and overweight luggage fee.

I liked Japan Air Line (JAL) because at the time they allowed me to check 3 bags for no extra fee, while EVA, Northwest, etc. only allowed 2. Things may have changed, so please do find out, as others suggested.

I think most asian intl flights limit you to two bags 23 kg each. One additioanl cabin carry on less than 7 kg. With overweight, you are looking at a penalty. If you are willing to pay a penalty, which ranges somewhere to $100, you might as well have a 3rd bag, probably less than 23kg. They will most likely give you hard time with overwight luggage in your own country than the US.

Everybody is right, usually the weight is between 23 and 25 kgs, or up to 50 lbs - it all depends on the carrier and needs to be verified. The carry on though also has a certain measures - for all of your luggage plus carry on you need to verify with the carrier what the measures of the luggage should be. They took once my carry on as it was "too big" they said, not too heavy...

Also, if you'll be bringing any alcohol, or any work of art, or food, you'll have to verify it again with the carrier. We got an oil-painting as a gift for our wedding and last time when my husband was leaving, they wouldn't let him have it in any of his luggage. They said we needed a certificate from the painter for it that it wasn't stolen. Well, we have an invoice, but a certificate...?

Have a safe flight :)

Yes and no. Flights to/from Asia and the US uses the piece concept which allows passengers up to 2 bags at a maximum weight of 23kg/50lb per bag. However the piece concept only applies for flights to/from the USA and for flights between Asia and all other destinations, there is no piece restriction but the total weight of checked luggage cannot exceed 23kg/50lb per passenger. For LCC (low cost carriers like Jetstar, Tiger Airways, etc) this allowance may be even lower.

ThaitoUSA- When I last flew JAL to the States in 2007 they had the standard 2 piece limit as everyone else. Perhaps you were given an extra piece for free because you have FF status, or were flying business/first class?
