My now-husband arrived a month ago, and we're filling out his Adjustment of Status papers. At which point does he receive an A#? Should he have one already?

He will get A# when he receives GREEN CARD.

Now he doesnt have A#. So write N/A

Actually, the A# will be assigned and printed on the NOAs for I485 and I765. NOA=notice of action, a confirmation of receipt of applications. The same A# will be printed on the EAD, of he applies for one.

I thought that the A# is located on the visa. Go pick up your husbands visa and look at where it says annotation; your should see A #1234567 EAC:06-121-52490 PET: HUSBANDS NAME.

Also, if you look at the example forms you will notice that the alien number has been filled out, so it should be assumed that you should have it already before filing the documents.

Not everybody has an A# before getting a greencard. If you don't, write N/A

For example, a tourist visa holder wouldn't have an A# until after they receive their greencard, whereas a K1 does have a A#.

Actually someone who has entered on a tourist visa will get a A# as soon as they file for AOS. The A# will be on the NOA1 that they get after they have applied.

If the person has entered on a tourist visa or VWP then you just put NONE in the box that asks for A#.

Presuming your timeline is correct and that you entered on a K1 visa, the most reliable place to find you A Number is on you NOA2, as mentioned above. Like PP said it's a 9 digit number preceded by an A

A numbers are not always printed on the visa.

That's correct, it will be on the NOA2 that you will receive on approval of your petition.
