What made you decide to bring your fiance/spouse/etc. to the U.S. instead of relocating to his/her native country?

We're staying here to pay off my student loans from my MLS. Should take a handful of years that. I love Bulgaria...but, I'm still working on learning their damnable language. Once I'm decent at it and the debt is paid off I wouldn't mind moving there to farm and live close to family. I think we are more likely to retire there though. Stuff tends to happen over the years to keep you somewhere, like kids, homes, cars, and good jobs. *shrug* We will visit at least once a year though, that's for sure!.

I work for the U.S. government so that played a big role in us staying.

I like Jamaica, but from what I have heard jobs are attained by patronage only and there is a fair amount of corruption. If only that Jamaican weather could be sent to the Eastern United States.

I have lived abroad before and wouldn't mind living in a European country (or a couple of others) in the future. The United States is a great country but like anywhere else there are problems and some cons to living here.

I earn more in one day than my fiance does in a month, and my job is not likely to be "downsized" due to the economy. Other factors are language, safety, and freedom. However, we have seriously considered my moving there. We are really tired of waiting for our life together to start. Safety and freedom are really the two biggest factors in our decision...

I agree. I make more in a day then my husband made in a month in Albania and more then he made in a week in Italy. I have an advanced degree that would be of no use in his country. Once we save up and he is a US citizen we will probably go back to Europe for a few years, but I don't know if we will ever live full time in Albania until we retire.

This is where I grew up. And life in the Philippines is harder than life over here in the United States. There is more opportunity here if you know where to look.

My husband is Hungarian (I'm also Hungarian), he emigrated in USA when he was 9 and it was very difficult to 'blend in''. He didn't wanted to move to Hungary or any parts of Europe. He is here for over 26 years, all of his family is here and has a house here, car, stable job etc. It was easier for me to move here in USA.

Customer service is better in USA. (he hates customer service in Hungary and Romania )

I'm here for 3 month's now and I can say that I like it here, and moving here was the best choice even if I miss my family and friends.

Oooh, I'm kind of glad this old topic surfaced. It was an interesting read.

My fiance will be moving here for a variety of reasons. He has been here before on a J-1 and wants to try living here again. Plus he will likely make more money in his profession here than he could in Ireland (he's finishing his degree this year). He also just doesn't want to live in Ireland for his whole life. I don't know if he'll want to stay in America forever, but we're at least going to be here for a while.

I did live in Ireland for a while. I did my masters there (primarily because he was there) and then stayed for another six months. I left because there were no jobs. The economy is tanked. There were things I didn't like about the country, but I'm fairly adaptable so I would have been happy to stay if the situation had been better. I have two degrees and the only job I could get was cleaning up after drunk people and mopping up their sick in a nightclub. I reached the end of my tether. And I have student loans to repay so it was time for me to get a decent job. Now I have a good job at a government agency and I'm not likely to lose it due to the recession. So I can support us for a few months while we wait for his work auth and for him to get a job.

Does anyone else feel a little guilty or stressed at the idea of your partner moving to be with you? Even though I KNOW he wants to move here and he probably would have tried to come here even without having me in his life, I feel stressed at the thought of him moving here and having to adjust and what if he doesn't make any friends and what if, what if, what if?! Lol. I need to chill. I know I moved to be with him before and it wasn't that big of a deal to me, so I shouldn't be stressing out for him. He's an easy-going kind of guy. As long as he has me, a bar or two to frequent, and sports to watch he'll be happy he says.

Main reason is I have two youngish kids here (11 and 12) and wouldn't want to leave them.

Other reasons are not being able to make money in Russia.

Not speaking Russian.

Other than that I could totally live there.

My hubby is working in the US government,so thats a big plus. The weather here in Texas is somewhat the same in Baguio City.Well, though Philippines have 5x cheaper cost of clothing apparels,groceries ,and other dry goods ,(shoppingwise),Texas(USA, in general) has a vast range of technical ,medical job opportunities. Though, we decided to pay our vacation trips to PI ...great for summertime!
