You can travel freely but bring your passport with the visa.

The answer to the original question is: Almost... and it's your I-94 that you have, not the K-1; the K-1 visa was dead upon U.S. entry.

In southern Texas (and perhaps in the other border states), there are Customs & Border Protection "checkpoints" on the highways, around 20 to 50 miles inland. The CPB agents are authorized to stop all vehicles to check citizenships of the occupants. I have far too much to say about this, but the short recommendation is to keep your valid I-94 AND your passport with you at all times. If your I-94 is expired and you have filed for AOS, keep a copy of your AOS NOA1 with you (with your passport).

My now-wife & I haven't traveled to south Texas yet, but I have her carry these papers with her at all times: Passport, Ecuadorian driver's license, international driving permit, marriage certificate, and (because we have it, and because her I-94 is now expired) the NOA1 for AOS. Bear in mind that there is great public & political frustration about not being able to handle illegal immigration, and the reaction (conscious or not) is to harass the lawfully-here but not-yet-legal immigrant. Avoid underestimating the power and pervasiveness of this attitude.

I was wondering what to do about the checkpoints myself. My fiancee and I were going to spend at least a week traveling after we marry around Texas and even though I do not plan on going through one of the checkpoints it is possible there is one that I have never ran across that we do pass through. After we leave San Antonio we are heading toward Alpine and the Davis mountains and go one night at the Observatory there.

i live outside Austin for more than 6 months and NEVER seen a checkpoint, and we do travel a little bit inside texas.... anyway... as long as you have your documents nothing will happen. I also carried my passport, I-94, wedding certificate... etc. with me until got my drivers license and EAD.....

It's fortunate that this has been your experience, but we can't make blanket assumptions. Some of these CBP agents are woefully ignorant of their authority (at inland checkpoints, they do NOT have the detention powers of certified Texas peace officers!) and of the Fourth Amendment. Their demands of "where are you going?" are nothing short of "Your papers, Comrade!"

In answer to luckytxn, the checkpoint south of Alpine is THE worst -- in fact, the entire CBP Marfa Sector is not my favorite. We must all know our rights, and consult with an attorney before undertaking road travel in southern Texas! It isn't called the "De-Constitutionalized Zone" for nothing.

Sadly, Dear, we ain't seen nothing yet. For all intents and purposes, the Fourth Amendment does not exist. Someday, I'll write about the totally illegal search performed on me as I crossed the pedestrian bridge from Eagle Pass, Texas toward Piedras Negras, Mexico. Also, the illegal questions asked when I was ticketed for speeding outside Laredo, Texas. Regarding how to handle such things, I wish I'd known then what I know now.

Thanks Tbone. I am in Laredo and travel a lot through different checkpoints but not too sure about the Marfa area at all and wanted to head through there. The checkpoints now have scanners that we pass through that can see inside our vehicles and trailers and usually drug and bomb sniffing dogs.I understand about them thinking they are allowed to do things that are not lawful. I am a truck driver and over 10 years I have been stopped for DOT checks all over the country at one time or another and many have told me that as part of my DOT check they are allowed to enter and search my truck. Their favorite is saying I am lying and making me prove I am right. Luckily everything is now computerized and anything I do can be checked by "Big brother". Anytime I turn the vehicle on it registers on their computers and the GPS system allows them to ping my truck at will and see where I am. They are even talking about putting in cameras and black boxes too. Of course we are told that the cameras run a loop constantly and would only be good for an hour and only be used to retrieve if we are in an accident to see why we were. I can it moving way beyond this though.

Well, THIS is a helluvan improvement, si man?
and usually drug and bomb sniffing dogs.
Their technique has been to bring the sniff-drugging dogs over to the right side of one's vehicle while the driver is talking to the CBP agent out the left window.
Their favorite is saying I am lying and making me prove I am right.
Well, my favorite saying shall now (and loudly, and repeatedly) be "I do not consent to any search!" Courts have repeatedly found that the claim and exercise of a Constitutional right cannot be converted into a crime.
Luckily everything is now computerized and anything I do can be checked by "Big brother".
"Luckily"?!
Anytime I turn the vehicle on it registers on their computers and the GPS system allows them to ping my truck at will and see where I am.
And all the Mexican trucks, 90% of which would fail even a lax U.S. safety/emissions inspection, can roar around the U.S. at will.
Of course we are told that the cameras... would only be good for an hour and only be used to retrieve if we are in an accident to see where we were.
I believe THIS without question, don't you?
I can it moving way beyond this though.
Our rights have eroded almost to the point of no return. What did Benjamin Franklin say -- "Those who sacrifice liberty for the sake of security shall have neither"? Or something like that, si man.

What is the MBC?
"MBC" is extremely irritating and potentially confusing shorthand for "moved by Charles." Charles is a VJ member who has the ability to move questions from one VJ forum to another VJ forum.

mbc is a code kim and i had worked out so we could tell who moved a thread, as in mbc or mbk. it's primarily for other organizers to know who moved that particular thread so if there were questions about it, they could pm the mover.

and no, i don't move questions, i move threads when i feel it is necessary.

sorry for the confusion the acronym created, i'll start spelling out mbc in the future.
