The situation is getting pretty bad in the states and to get a good full time job is not the easiest to come by. i am now stressed because of the fact that the time is passing and i dont have a fulltime job and wont be making enough to support our family.....I am working right now as seasonal and am making good money but i am laid off dec.24. there is no chance of getting hired full time in the near future and if a get rehired i will not be 'Full-Time' status for at least 2 years working, i will be picking up shifts but can go in aon daily basis and have no work....i am assuming that my interview date will most likely be in June and i dont think i am going to have things ready for that time because there is alot that i would need for ex. rent apt., buy the necessities for the apt (bed, refrigerator pots pans...etc...) most apt. you must pay usually 1st and last month plus security deposit, well more than 1000 bucks.... then i would need to fly to Colombia to pick up my fiance because she has never flown before and i would want to be with her at the POE. then i would need another 1000 ( i dont know if this is for the visa of after once in the US) so thats alot of expenses and to top it off i am not going to be making that kind of money, i will once again be laid off this month for who knows how long but i need a job that can support us. i would also need a co sponsor (which i could get one but i would obviously need a good job inorder to get the favor from the person)....right now i dont know if it is even worth it, we lived together in Colombia for more than a year and we suffered at times because money was rough but i think here we are going to just be puttin ourselves in debt because my fiance doesnt know english and would be difficult to get a job. and plus have health insurance.....at least in Colombia that was never a problem, but here i dont see it happening. my fiance is right now in the hospital that had a rush surgery and has been in ICU for 3 days now luckily with a gov't insurance but if that were to happen here in the US we would be indebt at least 30K so i dont know if it is even worth it continueing or just moving back to Colombia and living poorbuthappy......does anyone have any input, sorry for the rant but i couldnt help it anymore...thanks

When I came here in the US last March, my then-fiance was laid-off on his job and didn't get a penny out of the company even if he had work there for a decade so we basically lived-of with the SSI check. It was tough we thought that we will be ttravelling a lot and expect a lot of good things when I arrive here. he became depressed of not having a work and having me by his side that he think he should bring somewhere else eat good food and meet new friends, was stuck at home. We tried our best to save energy and water so we will pay low monthly bill and go to the grocery once a week. he only had 1,000 dollar in his savings account so he used it to pay for my Adjustment of Status so I can apply for a job right away. Luckily, as soon as I get a job he was also hired and our work are of the same area so transportation is really very convenient since I can't drive yet. Its just really a matter of adjusting and understanding of where you are right now.

Yes, sometimes the practical aspects of marriage must be dealt with before we can make an actual commitment. What's a commitment without the ability to follow through? Join the club.

Sorry you are in this situation.

I would focus your energey on getting a job and lining up a cosponsor. Once she gets her visa she can wait up to 6 months to enter the US, so maybe you can take advantage of that to save as much as you can and get a place set up.

Its a tough situation but you have some time to see what you can do.

Good luck :)

how much money do i need to make in order to show that i can support her? and if it was for her (my fiance) and her daughter (step daughter)?

i know how much i would need inorder for us to live and survive but how much do i need to claim to show that i can support? it would be necessary for me to have a cosponser because i dont even have much time living here in the US in the past 3 years....

also i have a cosponsor (my father) but he is an owner operator (truck driver) he can get a employer letter but it wont show how much he makes because its different everyday. my fiance will have to show his tax returns for the last 3 years but i know i wont be able to go with her and explain everything. my wife is a country girl that is not familiar with none of the documents or how things work in the US, let alone tax returns and things like that.....

i hate to be negative but it seems that everything is going to cost an arm and a leg just to get here in the states and start over again when we have our things in Colombia, we are a poor family but at least happy together....i just hate the fact that we'll not have health insurance and be living on credit cards becoming in debt more and more when our dream is to live here (USA) for a couple years then go back to Colombia, buy a house and live there......that wouldnt be til i retire and im only 25.....

i wish it was all easier....(like everyone else)

Household of 3 people... Look around. There must be a sheet somewhere in this forum with a table that shows the amount of roughly 125% above poverty line for a three person household.

For two people this is roughly 18,500 $ I believe.

It fairly easy to find a good job in USA.

We have Illegal Aliens on almost every city corner in USA who work and support family. They are called Day Labors, and the pick a corner in each city and stand there and get picked up each day for work.

They make around $10 per hour.

To me if you can't find a job in USA making good money then you are just not trying hard enough.

everyone has a different opinon of what good money is.....i dont mind making little money, i am used to it but what is important to me is having health insurance. all the illegal immigrants dont have health insurance which is something that i would need because after what has happened to my fiance this past week without insurance is a no go....and right now it is hard to find a job, i searched and searched for months, after 3 months i found a job. but i only work until the 24th....now i have to start again. sure i can do side jobs or waiting tables at night to give me cash but no insurance.....and alot to sve inorder to start new....

Bad US economy is a concern for me, too. But like many people here money is not the main reason that we applied to K1. If money were the only reason we would be better off living in Japan. It's true that you may get SOME job in the US if you don't choose which job to get. I heard that it's extremely difficult to get a so-called white-collar job for foreigners or green card holders unless they speak perfect English with a US college degree. But even if you do you may still remain poor. It may be like a choice between remaining poor among other poors (in your own country with insurance) or to be poor among the riches (who can pay insurance) in the US when you come to the US...

But a good thing about this bad US economy is that it might steer away those people who uses marriage or K1 to just come to and work in the US (a.k.a., those who commit a VISA fraud), and service centers will get to process fewer but more honest applications

very very true HelloMiffy. we decided to do the K-1 to try to get ahead and be able to support our family without having all the necessities that we struggled with for example not even having enough change to buy milk or anything....us thinking that the US we can have much more similar to what mossycouple said in her post, with thoughts to be able to travel and go out to eat...etc...but the way i see it is that i can have all that but i will have a large credit card debt (right now it is at $0) which is something i dont want or even want to think about.....now i see that i dont want to wait another year because 6 months (probable interview date) i wont be ready with everything that i need, and 1 year (6 months after visa issued) i will be ready but to have to wait 1 full year from now....i'd rather live poorbuthappy.....
