Like Merc said, I was afraid of disappointing my mother, not because she threatened me, but because she had high standards for me.

And those high standards can also make you a neurotic adult. I would know. I was not allowed to make a mistake when I was little. My parent's expectations of me were so high that I resorted to lying when I did something wrong. My mother was/is an alcoholic and my father is a militant-type person who thinks it is ok to do and say whatever without respect to peoples' feelings. But, heaven forbid, that I would do the same. Respect him but get no respect. I've been in counseling and had to read a book about boundaries just so I would know what was personally acceptable to me. I've survived a lot of mental, emotional, and psychological abuse and am still recovering. That woman should have reasoned with her child instead of forcing her to do something and then reacting with anger. That child should NOT have been treated that way and if I had been there, I would have gotten up and said something to the mother. You bet your A$$ on it. That child may grow up to treat her children the same way. As a few of you have said, she could suffer from an eating disorder that's in the making of her childhood.

Children need guidance. When faced with a decision, they need to know what their options are and what the consequences are. They should not be forced to choose a decision and then get disciplined for it and then never know the reason why their choice was wrong.

I have more to say but I'll save it for another post.

I just love it when some people, of course they are romanticizing, go about comparing the third-world and non-western countries with the USA in regards to raising children--and then these same people doing the comparisons, conveniently leave out all the prevalent problems in the those parts of the world.

Such as: no child-labor-laws, no compulsory educations for children K-12, trafficking in children for sex and slavery, child abuse, sexual abuse, infanticide, abortions to prevent birth of girls, stonings, hangings, mutilations, for crimes and transgressions even as slight as public displays of affection, using children to beg on the street, over-flowing orphanages, street children in gangs, street children sniffing glue and other inhalants, AK-47 toting toddlers, using children to clear minefields, overflowing refugee camps, no pre-natal or pediatric care, no immunizations, no marriage laws prohibiting underage girls from being sold in to forced marriages, practicing sex with girls as young as infants to cure AIDS, and the refusal to educate girls at any age.

I guess when non-western and third-world countries can fix some of these problems among others then I will entertain the comparison between the USA and the non-west and third-world countries in the raising and treatment of children.

In accordance with Georgia law, "The Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act," I am required to display the following in any and all languages that I may give immigration related advise:

'I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW AND MAY NOT GIVE LEGAL ADVICE OR ACCEPT FEES FOR LEGAL ADVICE.'

"NO SOY ABOGADO LICENCIADO PRACTICAR LEY Y NO PUEDO DOY ASESORAMIENTO JURÍDICO O ACEPTO LOS HONORARIOS PARA El ASESORAMIENTO JURÍDICO."

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

To avoid being labeled "Ethnocentric", which I don't think is a valid reply against my point considering the scope of globalization and the well-known facts on the condition of children around the world; however, I will amend my comment to include those in this country (USA) that also talk about the good-old-days here in the USA. Well in the good-old-days this country had slavery, segregation, no child-labor-laws, forced marriages of teenager girls to older rich males, no education for girls, dismal orphanges, wide-spread child abuse, etc. Not unlike many of the non-western and third-world countries today. I hope this clarification keeps the labeling out of the picture--and hopefully people won't be so easy to compare the old-days, or in my mother-land, or in my homecountry, etc. All this is just romanticzing the ideal of an Utopia that has never existed.
