But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

i am not one of the popular 'clique' here, so often my responses are overlooked... or just not accepted... and even mocked (see earlier in this thread)... but it does not mean that i do not have a right to express my opinion as much or as clearly as others here... and THIS happens to be a topic that i feel very strongly about

I really just have to say that I don't know where the clique is...but maybe that's cuz I'm not in it (if it really exists) either, but everyone should feel free to express their opinion. You can find what Gimy did as brave, none of her business, somewhere in between, or not give an opinion on that since you weren't there to see it...as far as I can tell, all opinions are valid.

And I think this was one of the best lines in the whole thread, by you,

a child can respect a parent without FEARING them

Do any of you watch SuperNanny or Nanny 911? Man some of those parents are just well, its just crazy. Anyway I don't think it was appropriate what happened in the Restuarant. Three people were wrong: The mom (force-feeding her kid), the child (not eating) and Gimygirl (threatening violence against another person and in front of children too).

I have watched supernanny a couple times, makes me not want to have kids. I don't agree with the restaurant woman's behavior, i don't think anyone should be treated like that, specially in public.

Gimygirl didn't threaten violence that I saw, she did tell the woman that her treatment of the child was abusive and unacceptable but if she threatened I missed that.

You know long ago a friend of my X's family offered her views on discipline when she saw me correcting my daughter for something who at that time was 3, and I've never forgotten what she said, what the first thought that came to my mind was.

She said, "sometimes you have to slap them to get them to pay attention or they'll never learn"

And the first thing that came to my mind was, "that just teaches them to slap people to get them to pay attention, with that logic in place, then would you just deck an adult who should already know what's acceptable behavior to get their attention and teach them better?

I just think it's so easy to point fingers at other people.

From reading this thread, you would think it's full of perfect parents (or parents-to-be). Everyone thinks the way they do things is right, of course, otherwise they wouldn't be doing them that way.

But If this was a loving fun bit of horseplay with no ill intent, there would be no reason for the father to feel defensive about being approached or be offended. What would be the grounds, the idea that someone cared enough to step forward to ensure the wellbeing of his child?

Personally, I wouldn't appreciate unsolicited advice from strangers, regardless of my intent. Becoming defensive I don't think necessarily indicates ill intent.

We all have our moments though and I just don't believe the kid was in serious danger.

None of us were there though, except Gimy...

People have different thresholds for what they see as abusive. I just wonder at what point those of you who said they would have told Gimy to shove it up her a$$ would actually intervene in a situation that YOU found unacceptable? Or would you never? According to what you are saying, the parent YOU see abusing their child should also tell YOU to shove it up your a$$. ;)

If I was going to do something, I would have called the police, not grandstanded with giving someone choking a child a 'stern warning'. and if the woman left beforehand, I'd have followed her out & gotten her license plate #

A child is in danger or he/she's not....and if it's real danger, well what gimy did was inadequate imo.

I don't really think it was any of your business to confront her. You don't know their situation. I don't advocate beating children but, hypothetically, for all you know that little girl could have severe eating disorders already. There have been studies recently showing young girls as young as 5 showing signs of anorexia. It could be that this is an ongoing battle to get the child to eat for fear of her starving to death. Perhaps her mother has tried every possible method to get her to eat and is now at her wits end. Now, after that outburst, that mother might feel ashamed and not make her eat ever again... that child could be dead from starvation by the end of the year. Like I said, just a hypothetical since none of us can really know what was happening there.

I have two kids and have had episodes in public as I'm sure most people probably have. I can tell you that my kids, though they both know Mommy would never do anything to hurt them and most of the time won't follow through with an actual spanking anyway, will scream at the top of their lungs in a store if I tell them they will get a spanking when we get home for acting up. Why do they do this? To embarrass me so that I will feel guilty and to get attention. If anyone would have come up to me at that point and cut into me the way you did with that woman I would have possibly backhanded that person on the spot. I have seen kids in stores throwing tantrums on the floor and their parents standing over them looking at me apologetically and I wanted to tell her to jerk him up and take him to the bathroom for a good lashing BUT that isn't my place so I stay out of it. Besides, I kind of feel sorry for them (the parent) at the time because we all know that even though everyone else around is thinking the same thing I am, if she actually spanked that kid right there EVERYONE would have given her the evil eye or possible called the police on her.

so by your own admission, violence is an answer for you and an acceptable method of punishment ... obviously our views greatly differ.

my children have never and (doubtful now since they are 7 & 9) will never throw a tantrum. i value my children as human beings ... hands are for loving NOT for hitting. there are FAR better solutions than to resort to physically hurting your child.
