So we got married last wednesday and we are not 100% sure what do we do next. My fiance visa expires on oct 14th so we have to harry up. I know that we have to get a ssn# and I wil take care of it this week. What else do we need to do? I read that we have to file for adjustment of status but I'm not sure where do I mail the I-485 package and what fee do we need to pay. if someone could help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Per your timeline, I see that you entered on a K-1 visa (fiance/e visa).

I believe the K-1 visa is a one-use visa, so that means your visa is already expired.

Your next step is to complete the I-485 and mail it off. I believe the Chicago office takes care of it. If you download the I-485, this should have all the instructions you'll need.

From what people have said on here, you are under no requirement to mail the I-485 off immediately. I've read some folks that have posted that you can wait years before mailing in the I-485. I've no idea if there are any consequences to it (ie, more difficult getting the approval for the green card) but it seems people do it with no problem. One consequence is that the foreign national will not be able to work or leave the country. (Well, they can leave the country, but just not return.) You're in a bit of a "limbo" status between using the visa and getting your green card.

The green card application costs a little over $1000. It should be listed in the instructions for the I-485.

Read the guides and the instructions to the forms.... a plethora of information exists there....

SSN need be applied for before October 1 or you will have to wait until EAD or GC

YMMV

I am thinking the same thing lol!

Enjoy married life and go on a honeymoon!!!!!!

Leave immigration stuff on the backburner for a bit. It will still be there, trust me on that!

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.
