Always amazed at how much people share

well I think a place like this breeds a sense of community....and people may feel that this is their 'safe haven' so to speak. so who better to talk to...especially when you dont have to look at anyone afterwards, lol

This has touched on several things here which are vital to understand why people are so open with their information (sometimes in quite amazing detail):

- a sense of community

- 'safe haven'

- you dont have to look at anyone afterwards (= anonymity)

This is all good and well, but the Internet is wide, wide open and what is out there stays out there. Any Tom, ####### or Harry can come on VJ and start snooping around and it is not too hard to put together "profiles" of people. In fact, I would suggest that you make the effort and try it for yourself with any reasonably "open" poster here on VJ, and you will most probably be shocked afterwards at the amount of data you have put together.

Something like this may not happen, but it can. Stalkers are everywhere, and the Internet is a bounty for them. So please beware just a bit about what you are putting out there, not only on VJ but other places too.

Without a doubt, everyone should exercise caution when posting personal issues on the internet. it is a given. But on this forum, people do come to vent their problems because this whole visa process is a very frustrating process. While I was going through mine, I often lurk on this forum to remind myself there are many, many couples in the same boat as I.

Once the visa process comes to an end, AOS period brings with it its own set of issues: maily adjustment. Then again, on this forum, you see couples who are going through similar issues though ealing with them differently. Some do it well, some don't .

Stalkers do exist on this forum but I would hazard a guess that more often than not it's the ex-spouses, ex-partners who are tracking their exs' posting to check on what they are saying about them or what their new partners look like etc.

I have seen in the past where someone from belgium was spilling the beans on her husbands boss and the boss posted nasty rebuttals. If I recall correctly, the OP requested removal of her post.

There are also some trolls as in the case of the guy from Alasaka who purportedly brought in a Russian bank robber as a wife:)

But the few veterans-turned -newbies ( including Moi) that you are seeing on this board , of late, I don't think are trolls. For whatever reason or the psychodynamics behind them, they want to continue participating under new screen names.

Also, as to people being able to put profiles together based on what's being posted, I think those who post pictures and urls of homepages etc are more at risk , me think.

well, i usually don't post anything personal around here. i did it once, because i thought that my experience will help someone go through their problems. but i will never do it again, because of so many judgemental people around here. meh...

I'd get MORE confused if I had to sift through loads of opinions though, a few trolls, a porn reference, some smilies, bickering that each other's opinion wasn't valid, a thread derailment, waffles, smurfs, kumquats, and whatnot..

ahhhhhhh but thats what makes things more of an intersting read

Ohhh I'm not saying that the personal drama threads aren't good reading...hehehe...quite the opposite and they DO tend to be the top viewed threads.

Maybe because of a few recent really detailed threads, I sit here and am truly amazed at how much people share about their private lives....everything from troubles in the marriage, family problems, health issues, financial woes, etc.... It's not that I think people shouldn't post all these things, and of course I read them and it doesn't bother me, but I guess because I'm pretty private, that even on an anonymous message board, I don't feel comfortable sharing the really intimate details of my life. I guess I'm just curious why people do share so much? I'm sure someone will take this the wrong way...dunno...and again I'm not saying people shouldn't get it all out if they need to. Just curious... *shrug*

ahhh, but there you are mistaken...there is nothing I really want to share...not at this time anyway I've used this board for support with immigration related issues.
