My son just plopped down in the family room (after American Idol of course) and said he was doing research for a history project.

In your opinion, what are the six most historic events of your lifetime, and why?

The only rule being that it cannot be something personal. For instance, when he asked my Father (his grandpa), Grandpa answered 'when you were born'. *Big 'AWWW' from the audience*

Being born and raised on different parts of the planet, Wes and I had different answers. Anybody else care to pitch in?

6? hmm dunno, but here are a few...

-I remember that early morning in July 1969 (I was 7) when my mom woke me up to go watch what was on tv: Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon.

-I witnessed pope John-Paul the IInd visiting my hometown somewhere in the 80's

HMM my most historical memory..

I had the opportunity to sit and discuss Milinium thoughts with the Eldest Taoist Priest in China (White Could Temple Beijing) in 1998, the gentle man was 102 yrs old.

Remember the Great Wall falling.

Remember sitting on the floor as my mother stopped vaccuming callopsing on the couch as we watched Kennedy (JFK) get shot.

I also remember the other Kennedy being shot as well.

Earthquake in San Francisco 1989. My airplane just took off from the airport as the quake hit. Pilot announced on the speaker part of the bridge had callopsed. and major quake. quietest plane flight I had ever flown... also extremely long for a 4 hour flight.

1 - 9/11 - because it was just so horrific and to see it all happen 'live' was just unreal, I remember crying as I watched the second tower fall, that day is forever burned in my memory.

2 - Princess Diana's Death - it was a huge terrible shock, I just could not believe it for a while. I lived on the outskirts of London and went to Kensington Palace on the Monday night (she died Sunday morning). The sea of flowers was rapidly growing and I actually walked past Elton John who was holding onto David sobbing, just mingling with the crowd. The silence and tears were palpable in the darkness, I tied a solid dilver heart necklace to the gates of the palace. I also raced off after the funeral andwaited on a motorway bridge in Watford, where I watched her coffin go past on its way to Althorp.

3 - The very first Space Shuttle launch in 1977 I think - it was just so amazing to see it take off and then return and land like a regular plane, truly historic.

4 - The fall of the Berlin Wall - it brought the East & West of Europe together and gave hope to those persecuted and oppressed in the West.

5 - Aids epidemic and the fear of it in the 80's/90's. I was in my late teens, early twenties and I remember it being a huge fear for people of my age. Condoms were suddenly an essential, it changed peoples outlook.

6 - Live Aid Concert - I was in Wembley Stadium for Live Aid and it was a day I will never forget, the emotion, the performances, the overwhleming importance of it all. The terrible famine in Ethiopia especially really moved me.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I agree except number 6, my other one would be Oklahoma city bombing. And I would change number 3 to the space shuttle explosion.

definitely with you in terms of the berlin wall & 9/11 but i have to add:

- the hurricanes of 2004 & 2005. it continues to have an impact on the areas hit hardest, inc. my hometown.

- the 2000 election. i won't comment further and incite a flame war.

- the iraq war. ditto.

- the school shootings (columbine, etc.). i was in high school when it really started in the 90s and i just couldn't believe that kids were doing such things... esp. in AMERICA where they seemed to have so much more opportunities and advantages. was a real eye-opener.

Hmm...

1) Lockerbie (Pan Am 103) bomb. It happened about 50 miles from my childhood home. I guess I was about 15 at the time.

2) 9/11. Everyone who was alive when Kennedy was shot says they can remember exactly what they were doing at the time they heard the news. 9/11 is similar, I think.

3) Chernobyl.

4) Tenerife air crash - still the worst in history.

5) SE Asian tsunami

6) Nelson Mandela's release from prison. It's rumoured that one of the first things he asked was "Is Don Bradman still alive?"

rch go take a happy pill will 'ya, today u r not funny

 agree with that

that is just a tad offensive to a royalist, she was not "whoring" in the back of a limo

For me, Diane's death, Kennedy's assasination, the Moor's murders (UK) 9/11, the moon landings and the years of the troubles in Northern Ireland

3. End of Cold War ....... looking back I personally wonder if a standoff wasn't better/more stable globally than one side taking an attutude of superiority and domination

4. Invention of PC

5. Invention of Internet

6. Americas reaction to 9/11 - i have always said it was only ever a SINGLE terrorist event (with very high casualties) audacious but just one attack. if every other country who suffered a single terrorist attack lauched wars against countrys (connected and not) in retaliation no hope for world peace ........ this from someone who grew up in a country where terrorism was a part of everyday life from her teens onwards.
