:crying: Anyone driving a really good used car!! I love my 86 Honda CRX, but the daym thing keeps breaking down on me. It has 190,000 miles and just turned 20 and just started to fall apart, besides all the driving I do to keep $$ flowing in.

I don't honestly want to buy another used car, cause I could have car payments plus repairs, or I could just try to keep this one going until my mechanic says go away you come here too often or I push it over a cliff.

I went on line and it gives me a headache seeing those big $$$ and the mileage on cars they are selling used.

I think I am finally getting Anton convinced to help me buy me a new one .

Any suggestions?

Stick with the Honda's. I have 2004 civic. After working 5 12 hour night shifts I fell asleep driving home. Woke up in time to see brake lights. I hit my brakes slid off into the median. The car rolled up on its top. I was fine. Only had liability insurance though. I had it towed home. Replaced the wid screen popped out some dents. Still running like a champion. Great cars

Ok so I work in an auto parts store and part time as a mechanics assistant (by far not a mechanic tho) so here's my advice. BUY FOREIGN! My Subaru is a 92 with 190,000 miles on it, and I've only ever had to do oil changes, air filters, blablabla, and replace the ORIGINAL clutch, which was done around 175,000 miles. Also, it's always a good idea to find decent mechanics in your area, and when you test drive a "new" car, text drive it to a mechanics shop to be looked at. Test drive the HELL out of the car too, take it to it's limits. And if a dealer wont let you have a persoanl mechanic look at the car. Go elsewhere.

A Japanese compact would be inexpensive and reliable -- Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla. I've drived a 96 Sentra (bought used in 1998) for 8 years, and apart from maintenance items (oil changes, brakes, etc) the only things I had to replace were the alternator ($600) and drive belts ($150).

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

Totally agree, but wanted to add that if you buy foreign cars in the US, chances are you are supporting American jobs because most foreign cars (unlike many American cars) are actually built here. From what I know the only foreign car company not producing at least part of their lineup in the US is VW even though that could change...

Since you're probably not looking at a new car, I'd say stick with either Honda or Toyota (especially if you have a good mechanic), even though if you can afford it take a peek at VW as well. I'm driving a 97 Honda Civic and it's a decent car for it's age (though undermotorized), but it doesn't compare to my old 85 VW Golf in terms of sturdiness and reliability. All of these cars have fairly high prices for used cars, but that has a reason.

Well, I was an auto mechanic for 11 years, so I can give the mechanic viewpoint. Ditto what has been said. lol.

Cars to consider:

Honda

Toyota

Subaru

Nissan

(older) Volvo

VW

Kia

(newer) Hyundai (old ones were #######)

Suzuki

Geo (GM, but not made by GM - made by Suzuki and others)

Cars to avoid at all costs:

ANYTHING by GM (including Hummers.)

BMW

Isuzu (GM)

Mitsubishi (Chrysler)

Undecided:

Ford

Chrysler (newer ones. Old ones are #######)

Mazda (Ford - used to have issues, but I think they're better now)

Also, the comment about "foreign cars" being the only ones made in the US is correct. My 2000 Toyota Tacoma is 95% US-Made. A Chevy S-10/Extreme/Whatever is about 10% US-Made.

Hondas have been made in Marysville Ohio since 1982, as well as other US plants.

Subarus are made in Indiana.

The new Toyota Camry is being made by Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries) in Indiana.

Nissans are made in Tennessee, Mississippi, etc.

GMs are made in Japan, Canada and Mexico

Fords are made in Japan, Canada and Mexico

So.....please avoid buying anything GM. They're #######, and always will be. I swear I've worked on a million of them, and there's nothing about them that impresses me, except their piss-poor engineering.

Not that I'm biased, or anything. lol

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Have you sold that Neon yet, Joel? You know that it has a ready and willing caretaker..... :P

I have a 1990 Sentra. Although it's not pretty, it runs pretty well. If you're looking at new-new cars though, you probably have more to spend than the $600 my car cost!

I have to admit that if I were going to buy a new car, I'd look long and hard at the Chevy Cobalt. We have Impalas at work which are just too big for me, but other than the size I like them very much. And obviously you can't write off the Civics and Corollas, or the New Toyota Yaris. Another one that's just come/coming out is the Honda Fit - looks pretty cool and it's not much more $$$ than anything else in that "small car" price range.

I will admit to liking the Chevy Aveo. I'll have to check into who actually makes it.

Dodge Neon - as long as you got one of the few that didn't blow out the head gasket within 60,000 miles, and you get rid of it before 100,000, you should be fine.

Honda Fit. I love it. Hate the name. I would not buy it just because of the name.

Okay, answered that question.....

Chevy Aveo :: "this Chevy is really a Daewoo Kalos, straight out of Korea."

I am a bit biased and I personally would move nissan down to the list of cars to avoid at all costs. I have heard that they will run forever, which is why I bought my 1995 Nissan Sentra.

Under a 5 year 60 thousand mile power train warranty, at 4 years 42,000 miles my nissan, which I bought new and was up to date on all maintenance, blew its front seal. I was on vacation and was 7 hours away from home, driving on an interestate when this happened. When it blew the front seal, it almost immediately lost all it's oil and threw a rod. It cost me 6000 to repair the thing, I had no choice I was on vacation with my then 8 year old daughter. Nissan refused to cover the cost of repairs even though the car was still under warranty and I could prove maintenance. This was not just the service station...I took it all the way to corporate and they STILL refused to cover it.

They're great if they keep running, if they aren't you're on your own.

Front Seal? $6000? Did you get KY with that?

There are only 2 "front seals" on a car: The automatic transmission front pump seal, and the engine front crank seal. A front crank seal is about $15, and takes about 4 hours to replace on a vehicle with a timing belt. 1 hour or less on a timing chain engine.

Front pump seal is also about $15, plus 10 hours labour to remove and reinstall the transmission. 10 hours labour @ $60/hour = $600.

I would be interested to know just what the hell they charged you $6000 for. A brand new engine - from Nissan - is only $3500 (for a V6.... Sentra engine would be around $2000), plus maybe $800 to install it.

Seriously....there is absolutely nothing on a 1995 Sentra that "should" cost $6000 to repair. In 1999, that would have been the value of the car.

Ok....just noticed you're in Canada.....

Still....that's what? $4500US? That's still way too much.

I see you took it to a "service station". That's why Nissan refused it. Warranty only allows repairs at Nissan dealerships. All car manufacturers are that way, and always have been. Why should they pay retail for warranty parts when they can make you go to the dealership and use their own parts which cost them very little.

I'd say the cost was very extreme, but also that your expectations are a little extreme. Warranty has always only applied to repairs made at the dealership, unless it's a 3rd party purchased warranty.

And yes....I worked at Nissan for 2 years, and am a certified Nissan tech, so I'm a little biased on this one.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
