I wasn't. Real question. :(

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Relax, zqt3344. Lucky and Scott were joking.

I was intending sarcasm...would have thought that obvious...but then, many do excuse such backwards barbarism with cultural relativism, which was the point I was making.

Unbelievable. I have respect for different cultures and believe the they enrich our world, but that has nothing to with culture. Which man in his sound mind would even think about entering into a marriage contract with a 1-year old? I feel so sorry for all those girls that have to live like that without any opportunity to choose freely what they want to do with their lives.

By the way, Ayathollah Khomeini married a 10-year old. Very disturbing.

In every difficulty lies an island of opportunity.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Call it marriage, Islamic style.

Saudi marriage officiant Dr. Ahmad al-Mu’bi told Lebanese television viewers last week that it’s permissible for girls as young as 1 to marry — as long as sex is postponed.

Al-Mu’bi’s remarkable comments also included an explanation that “there is no minimal age for entering marriage.â€

“You can have a marriage contract even with a 1-year-old girl, not to mention a girl of 9, 7 or 8,†he said. “But is the girl ready for sex or not?†What is the appropriate age for sex for the first time? This varies according to environment and tradition,†al-Mu’bi said.

Think about..at ten, you can mold her into what you want without interference from anyone.

It is exactly the opposite of what I will tell my daughter--don't marry until you know who you are!

That's what I was going to post. The girl would grow up knowing only how to take care of her husband. She wouldn't be "corrupted" by outside influences. Considering what I know of Saudi society, it would seem to be a Saudi males dream come true.

who would want to marry off their 1 year old daughter? thats just as crazy as marrying one.

Someone who

A) believes women are subservient and property.

2) Someone who has more children than they can afford.

~) A real chopf##k.

Now jumping in with some (at first glance tangengial--so bear with me) factoids.

Until 1920's, it was not at all unusual in India (more in North than in South, but...) to see brides as young as 4--which led to the obvious problem of widows almost as young, and the misery to which they would be consigned (Hindu society was--and to a somewhat reduced extent, still is--atrocious in treatment of widows); the Child Marriages Act or "Sarada Act" (named after Harvikas Sarada, who promulgated it) was passed in light of this (unfortunately, the Pushkar Fair shows how poorly this is enforced--even in Sarada's own constituency).

Beyond doubt, it shows just how regressive the House of Saud, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, are!

As an answer to LS, I'm going to guess minimum age for consensual sex being set by these Salafi chopf#cks as 9--based on that set by Shia chopf#ck Khomeini for Iran.
