The Holocaust Remembrance Day observed yesterday honors the 6 million Jewish Holocaust victims (hence the Star of David in the picture). It is a national day of observance in Israel.

A separate day, observed January 27, honors the 11 million people who died as a result of Nazi policies. This includes the three million Catholic Polish people you mentioned.

You're correct in that Jews weren't the only victims of the Nazis; however, after looking at the website you've pointed us all to, it's become quite clear you've misunderstood the information presented there. That's not entirely your fault, either. It's been written in such a way as to show a somewhat skewed presentation of the facts.

I'm referring to this paragraph in particular: " Of the 11 million people killed during the Holocaust, six million were Polish citizens. Three million were Polish Jews and another three million were Polish Christians and Catholics. Most of the remaining mortal victims were from other countries including Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Holland, France and even Germany."

It's become quite clear over the 60 (and some odd) years since the end of WWII and the Holocaust that somewhere around 11 million people were put to death by the Nazi regime. While there might have been six million murdered Polish citizens, half of which were Jews and the other half Christians and Catholics, these numbers alone give a false representation of what the total figure was for Jewish deaths during the Holocaust.

If someone didn't look carefully at that paragraph, they might come away thinking "only three million Jews" lost their lives, as opposed to what we originally thought. That's not the case. The key phrase here is "three million Polish Jews." Jews in many more countries than just Poland were killed. In fact, the paragraph alludes to this itself, but fails to mention the fact that "most of the remaining mortal victims from other countries" were Jewish as well (with a few here and there sentenced to concentration camps for being traitors or homosexuals).

So now then, let's look at the numbers again, shall we? We have 11 million killed off in the Holocaust. Six million of these were Polish, three million of which Jewish and three million that were Christian/Catholic. The vast majority of the five million murdered who weren't Polish were also Jewish as well, so what does that tell you? That says the death toll could conceivably be anywhere from four-to-eight million dead, roughly speaking. It's difficult to tell, of course, since the records kept weren't particularly great and the Nazis didn't care if anyone remembered their victims, unless they had been useful for "scientific" testing purposes.

The point I'm making is that the "three million Polish Christians and Catholics" who died due to the Nazis don't, in any shape or form, detract from the total number of Jews who perished during the Holocaust. B)
