I drive a ten year old cheap, compact car and will continue to do so until it kicks it. I can get away with filling up just about once a week (although it's a little more frequently now that hubby works 20 miles away).

I definitely plan to buy a hybrid, but I've heard that there are very long waiting lists to buy these cars. Is this true?

Depends on the model / make..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. Probably both.

In said case, I'd say they're related by more than just consequence.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

It's just that people seem to ignore the $500 car payment and instead look at the $50 in gas savings a month. A 5 year old civic in good shape still gets great mileage and saves you $$$. With no batteries to worry about.

I know I read this article 2 year agos about how only the civic and prius hybrids actually saved money (when taking into account depreciation, gas savings, increased maintaince costs for hybrids). This was 2 years ago so I would assume the list has exxpanded, but I still don't know if paying $5K more for an Escalade hybrid (saw one at the DC auto show) would save much in the long run. I am also aware that those who could afford to buy an Escalade hybrid would likely not be too worried about gas costs.

Start drilling for oil in this part of the world....... Quit the crying over what it will do to the environment.

$4.00 a gallon for regular is just .50 cent away for the most part.

Hell, I see $4.50 a gallon by mid summer if this keeps up.

And as for those SUV's out there...... Hey if they want to pay $100.00 to fill-up go right ahead............. but don't come crying to Dad, you wanted that monster when you saw it in the show room.... now you gotta pay to look big proud and mighty

It could be true. You also have to take into account where to drive- city driving benefits hybrid batteries since stops regenerate the cells; how often you drive- the fuel savings can be much more than $50 per month when compared to larger tanks and less efficient motors; and finally- credit history! Three folks I know have decent credit and Prius vehicles and they pay roughly half on 48 month loans of what a couple of other friends pay for 60 month loans on their SUVs.

As for the old Civic ditto. While hybrids are good for the pocketbook in the long run as long as the car is taken care of (much like any other car may I add), its technology still has its limits.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

If I paid all this money for my finacee to come here only for us experience the same kind of poverty in many areas where she came from, I'm going to be pissed.

This possibility has motivated me to finally make an earnest attempt to learn Vietnamese so I can Immigrate there. They have 9% annual growth! I can imagine what the neighbor's will be saying: "Poor Thuy, he only married her for a Visa and she's to blinded by love to see it"!
