We just got the call: Nani's Mom has been granted a visitor visa today so she can come and visit with us when the Baby arrives. What a relief! I thought we'd have a slightly better than 50/50 shot at getting this one accomplished.

Needless to say that Nani is in heaven right now. As am I. This is going to be a huge help for us when we become parents this fall. Awesome.

WOOOO HOOOO HOOOO! :D

That's really great! I know the feeling, wondering if your spouse's parents will actually ever be able to visit the US and be granted a tourist visa since they are not from a more financially stable country.

We hope one day in the future to try to see if Sujeet's parents could visit, it doesn't hurt to try, and like you said I'd figure a 50/50 chance.

You both must be so happy about it, and I'm sure Nani's mom is thrilled she could come see her grandbaby!

Congrats!

We will be trying to get mywifes parents in for a visit later this year. I may turn to you for procedural advice at some point, if that's allright :)

Alright, here's a summary of how we went about it:

I wrote an invitation letter on Nani's and my behalf. In the letter, I detailed that we are expecting our first baby and would like for her to be here for the time when the baby is due and the first few weeks thereafter.

I attached:

Doc's notice confirming prgnancy and due date

Copy of Nani's birth certificate (to establish the mother-daughter relationship)

Copy of Nani and my Marriage Certificate (just for the heck of it)

I-134 with employment letter and bank statements

We also transferred some funds to MIL's account a few weeks back just in case the Consulate wants to see her bank statement. Besides, she'll need funds anyways to pay for the airfare and all the stuff Nani is going to have her bring along.

Nani's mom brought the follwing additional items for the interview:

Employment letter with acknowledgement of sufficient vacation time for the trip

Bank statement

Property statement

It was apparently a rather short affair at the Consulate. Must have been as she called us at 1:30-ish this morning which is only 9:30-ish over there. She said that she was second in line. The first lady was denied her request for a visa which, according to MIL, may just have had to with the fact that she had no sound explanation of how her child made it to the US. She stumbled something about her daughter having left for Saudi Arabia years ago to work there and now lives in the US but she didn't know exactly how that came about. I suspect that that may just not have been the answer the CO was looking for.

Anyhow, Nani's mom was next and presented the package that I prepared for her to the CO. Of her documents, he only wanted to see the employment letter. Then she was asked a few questions:

Why do you want to travel to the US?

How did your daughter move to the US?

How long has your daughter lived in the US?

What is your daughter's (immigration) status in the US?

How long has your daughter been married to her husband?

When is the baby due?

Do you have any evidence of your relationship to your daughter included with your application?

Is your daughter your only child?

Do you have any political problems here in Ethiopia? (I thought it was intersting that they'd ask this question)

Then she was asked to pay the visa issue fee ($45.00). Once that was done, she received her little pick-up slip to come back after 4:00pm to pick up her passport and visa.

All in all, she was inside the Consulate just about one hour and that was that.

We feel very lucky today! :D
