American born children and dual citizenship

How many people here have had children born in the US and gotten dual citizenship for their children? My only concern is that if something were to happen to me I would not want my wife to have any problems traveling in her country or living there if she decided to after I were to die.

My daughter has dual citizenship although she was not born in the US. It was one of the first things we did after she was born and out of the hospital, go down to the consulate and apply for US citizenship. It is generally not a big deal. Your wife should contact her country's consulate for details on how to get your child dual citizenship.

Though Discouraged by the State Department and USCIS, Dual Nationalities are not strictly illegal.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

My son was born in the US and has dual citizenship, US by birth and Italian through me. In order for him to get Italian citizenship all I had to do was to follow the rules about birth registration provided by the Italian consulate website. It was quite simple. I am sure procedures might different from one country to another but it is something that can easily be done. I would check out the Mexican consulate your area falls under and start from there.

My children are Swedish citizens since Swedish citizenship is granted on the grounds of Jus sanguinis (right of blood). The US on the other hand, as we all know, practices jus soli (right of soil) and thus our kids have rights to dual citizenships. Neither of the countries forbid it right now, though prior to 2001 they would have been required to pick one, since Sweden didn't recognize dual citizenships before then.

In my case, I became a US citizen through my mother before 2001. When they changed the law, they retroactivly granted me swedish citizenship.

Hi Isabel,

my son has dual citizenship, too. You can apply for the German passport for him at your German consulate. But you have to go there in person since October last year.

Sorry if I get a little off topic in this topic... But I have a question regarding dual citizenship :)

So the kids get dual citizenship right away and there's not problem, thats great! But what about the mother or father who is not American? How does she/he apply for a Dual?

In my case, I am Canadian and if I want to apply for a dual, when can I do that? Some woman told me that you have to wait like 8-10 years  There goes 10% of my life lol.

K1-Visa in Montreal, Canada.

4/07 - Filed the I-129 F [Petition for Alien Fiancé(e)] Along with Bio forms [G-325a for both of us]

6/07 - Forms got resent back to my Fiance because I forgot to sign some papers. [silly me]

11/28/07 - Got my K1-Packet 3!!! It was a headache to fill in the papers.

2/15/08 - Sent all documents and forms through express! I was close to the expiration date

3/27/08 - Interview letter!!! I was in the US with my Fiance so I couldn't come back in time, rescheduled appointment.

4/24/08 - Got my interview done :) Approved! Passport+visa+brown envelope will be sent within a week.

5/1/08 - Got my Visa!

~ Flying to US on 6/11/08.

~June 19 2008- Married!!!

7/25/08 - Sent in AOS: I-485 along with EAD, AP.

8/7/08 - EAD, AP, AOS touched.

8/19/08 - Got an RFE for I-485... Fixing it.

8/22/08 - Biometrics taken in Portland.

10/08 - Another Bio (for work authorization card).

-- received my work authorization card and advance parole papers in meantime--

1/15/09 - AOS INTERVIEW *faints* in Seattle, Washington.

2/2/09 - Green Card!

If you are in the US on a spousal visa, you can apply for citizenship 3 years after you have received permanent residency. You will need to mostly remain in the US for those 3 years.

Great! So after I get my permanent residence... I'll apply for a dual. I love my home country, can't just leave it like that :P

Thanks!
