It is a cult, it is insane, and it is absolutely evil. Anyone comparing it to a religion such as Christianity, Islam, or Buddhism is downright offensive and ignorant. You have to PAY to get the "helpful knowledge" of Scientology, and only after you have invested thousands upon thousands of dollars, if not even millions, do you get the "truth". Last time I checked, you can find a bible for free in millions of places and you don't have to pay to walk into a service on Sunday, likewise for the other big religions. Donating money for the support of these faiths is optional, you do not have to pay to be a Christian!! Sure, no one will dispute that there are Christian or Islam, etc, fanatics, but any large group perpetuating such serious beliefs as a religion does will have fanatics. Scientology is a disgusting disgrace and I cannot wait for the day that they get taken down. The stories coming from those involved that got out are absolutely unbelievable and terrifying.

Someone could easily be offended that you've included their religion with other two in your own statement.

The stories coming from those involved that got out are absolutely unbelievable and terrifying.

I'd like to read (hear/see) some more stories of other escapees. So far, I have only seen those on the BBC report. Do you have any links or names I could search for?

Well you could look it up yourself. No matter - What I mean is that with organisations like Scientology and indeed the fundamentalist sects of general religions the idea that "being religious" involves slavishly abiding by the literal words of certain texts (or indeed the words of certain leaders or high level figures), rather than living your life according to a general set of high-level philosophical principles.

If this weren't the case then everyone who holds say Xian views would likely be indistinguishable from the folks who think, for example, that the world is 5000 years old, or that creation happened exactly according to the words written in Genesis (i.e. no room for metaphor). Clearly that isn't the case.

All this is pretty general of course - up until you look at the characteristics of the people who join these organisations. You tend to see certain things: people commit everything to one of these organisations to the point where it negatively impacts normal life - even to the point of alienating their own families (which is why I object to this particular organisation), their weird and agressive recruiting tactics and the way that that they attack (always aggressively, sometimes violently) anything and anyone that questions the belief system.
