One thing - Hubbard became acquainted with occultist, Aleister Crowley.

So, scientology is a branch of witchcraft?

They believe space aliens dropped us here or some nonsense.... but you gotta pay a lot of money to get that little tidbit from them ;)

I believe he's both. The same can be said for the leaders of every religion. Does the Pope truly believe that he speaks for God?

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

I think most people who follow a particular religion, probably believe that religion is the truth. Otherwise, why would they follow it? Unless it's for some other reasons... obvious reasons that come to mind is status, power, money.

Scientology isn't a religion IMO - its a cult.

I happen to agree but, to its followers, it's a religion and they probably believe it's the truth. Some people say any religion is a cult.

One time I went into the church of scientology for a "free personality test", they were on the street outside in Toronto telling people to come in for them.

So I went in and took it and the lady told me I was lying on my test and that it was impossible that my answers were truthful. So I figured "fine whatever" and I tried to leave and her and this man stood in front of me trying to tell me to retake the test and go with them to talk to them.

At that point I basically bolted. It was pretty intimidating.

I sure wish you remembered those questions! I'd like to take that test just to see the outcome. I wonder if it's available online.....

I think you can believe in religion without subscribing to cult behaviour. The stuff on how and who that organisation recruits really is quite worrying - but in a lot of ways its not too dissimilar to some of the fundamentalist Xian sects (the folks who take the bible literally, for instance), or indeed the Mormons, but obviously those folks don't speak for any and everyone who holds Xian beliefs.

In a lot of these cases - its religiosity that's the problem.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

LOL...it's hilarious that on one hand they dismiss modern psychology as bunk, but then they've got this machine that somehow they just 'know' how to measure ones emotional state with. That right there is enough to keep any reasonable minded person from ever joining that cult.
