I think when it was for their own good......if they were hurting themselves or others, I would step in and do what I had to do.

If it's a matter of safety for yourself or the rest of your family or the security of your home.

If they're stealing from you in order to finance a chemical dependancy, sometimes pressing charges is the first step in getting them clean.

Or, if they're hurting someone or themselves, professional help could be the best thing for them.

In either case, if it's reached the point to where illegal activity is occuring and the parents can no longer control the child's behavior, then maybe it is time for the authorities to step in. Especially if this is an older child. How are they going to be able to handle themselves in the real world if they can't even follow your rules? Will you be able to stop them from being charged once they're outside of your house? AND.... will they be able to stop the behavior that's asking you if they should be charged in the first place?

As much as you love your child, there are times when they need to face the consequences of their actions. If they have broken the law, and this is not a new issue (meaning you've tried many times to stop a bad behavior from your child with little success), the only option you have may be to leave it up to the law. Obviously, all considerations such as what the ramifications of this may be need to be looked at, but it may be the only option in the end.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
