I'm curious about marrying a foreigner but what if it doesn't work out? Do you only get 1 chance to bring someone to the usa for life? What if you get divorced can you remarry and go throught the whole process again? I'm just wondering if this is a one shot deal. Thanks for the advice. Newbie!

my advice is if your not sure the marriage will work , take some extra time to get to know your future spouse more , why think of divorce when the marriage doesnt even exist yet , marriage is a comitment and shouldnt be taken lightly I say if your thinking it might not work out eather get to know your fiance more or forget about marriage for now

I agree. If you are thinking of divorce already, you are not ready for marriage and definitely not ready for marriage to a foreigner.

Nothing says you have to find a woman or man from a foreign country and marry in two or three months....although some do. Take time and get to know the person you will join in a relationship with. If you can't go to their country and they can't come here very often, then spend every day talking and communicating online for a while. Ask a lot of questions. Online relationships are unique in one sense in that you can learn to communicate with your partner as that is all you have. You must talk and if you can't hold a conversation online for a few months without getting bored or tired, then its not the relationship for you in my opinion.

There is always risk involved in any marriage that one or the other will become either discontented and unhappy or unfaithful. You can never get around that. All you can do is to take the time to know that person intimately. Don't rush it. Those that rush off in a marriage to a foreigner have a bigger chance of being disappointed in the end whether its a divorce or someone just using them for a visa. Those that are truly in love, and most are, will take the time to get to know each other.....even if it takes a few years to get comfortable with each other.

In my opinion, a couple of months knowing each other and one visit to their country is not enough to really know someone....especially in marrying someone from a foreign country. There are so many cultural differences and things to learn about a person that it takes time. Each relationship will be different, so all I can say is take your time. Find the right one and not neccessarily the first one that shows interest.

Good luck!

Fiance's and spouse visas do not have a lifetime limit of one. However you might find your heart does.

A Warning to Green Card Holders About Voting

Please take some more time to get to know the person you are planning to spend the rest of your life with. It doesn't sound like you are at all ready. If you aren't sure it's going to work out now, take some more time. Marriage is a serious decision. The visa process is a long and hard road, your relationship will have to be a strong one to endure all the ups and downs of the journey.

Best of luck to you.

Agree with what has been said about getting to know your SO first and ensuring marriage is the right path for you. You can get as many K1's as you want although further applications will probably have more scrutiny by Uscis especially if they are only a couple of years after the 1st one. I believe that if you do marry and then divorce within 2 years then your Foreign partner would have to leave the country although others will be able to confirm this.

Please Please be sure before you start this process and never get married if you are not 100% cetain that you want it.

Good luck with your decision.

Maybe you should go to your fiance's country and live with that person for a month or so and see how it goes. I think you would have a better idea of what you should do compared to having reservations.

To apply for a K1 visa you have to get a waiver if your last K1 was less than 2 ( or is that 3 ) years ago OR if this is your 3rd or more lifetime. I married a foreigner way back in 1985, so this is number 2 in 24 years ( assuming we get approved this year ) Last time I was being very cutting edge and met him online . I have not met anyone yet i'm just trying to decide if meeting a foreigner is the way to go for me. Thanks for all the advice though! It sucks that you only have 3 months to get married after they come to the USA. I wish it was more like a year then you would really know each other. I don't want to feel rushed and think living together for a year is ideal. Well time to start searching...........

That's right, you only have 3 months to get married, but that's not all.

To apply for k1 you need to physiqually meet your fiancee in the last 2 years, and to have evidence of that(pictures, tickets, and so on).

So this is some extra time to get to know the person you wanna marry.

It's entirely up to you, how you conduct your relationship. The three months applies only to the time between US entry with a fiance visa and your marriage. Absolutely nothing besides your own convenience, time and budget will limit your courtship before you are engaged or during the fiance visa process. Have your eyes open. If practical, live together in her country.

If you're interested in looking for a foreign wife, head on over to some of the regional forums on this site and ask how people met their fiance's and wives. You'll get a lot of good advice about which dating websites are total scams and which ones are good. Heck maybe even someone will offer to set you up with a relative or friend. :)

Anyway, my $0.02. Best of luck to you and welcome!

I have NO idea why ANYONE would EVER want to look for a foreign spouse on purpose, sitting here comfortably in front of a computer in the U.S. WHAT a freaking NIGHTMARE this whole immigration process is! Having said that, if I could go back, I would NEVER change my life in a way that would have prevented me from meeting my sweetie. It's just that there are so many untruths out there about foreign women (and men). Foreign spouses are not somehow "better" than Americans, they are just different. If there's one thing I've learned when I've traveled to Vietnam, it's that people all over the world are just people. Moms all over the world love their children, brothers care for their brothers, and all of us shed tears about much the same things. Also, people all over the world do bad things to each other sometimes.

I spoke these words (I'm paraphrasing in this post) to 100-some people at my engagement ceremony in Vietnamese. I'm sure I brought a tear or two to some eyes, especially my future mother-in-law's. But it's the truth. People are just people. So please, don't go looking for a foreign spouse just because they are foreign. I think you will disappointed.

If anyone would like to flame me, I am pretty thick-skinned. I'm a construction worker, after all.
