What's really sad? I remember the days when retailers did believe in giving their employees holidays off. And customers respected and understood retail employees have families and lives too!

Anybody else finding having to work the day after Christmas hard?

Obviously you've never worked in retail

I agree with this point completely. My fiance asked me if I wanted to go to the movies yesterday and I gave him a lecture about not supporting any commercial enterprise that refused its employees time off at christmas. Of course, some people HAVE to work (health workers, police, fire services etc.) and some people have no family to spend christmas with but I'm sure they enjoy a couple of days rest as much as the rest of us.

I paused to ponder the meaning of christmas yesterday... and I came to the conclusion that it really doesn't matter what it's about if it makes people stop and spend time giving and enjoying the company of family and friends.

Wow! A rarity. I too feel the same. I think it is just rude to expect someplace non-essential to be open on what should be a family day. You really could not pick up that carton of milk or loaf of bread the day before? Funny how people used to be able to do it! I remember when a 7-11 was open, ahhh... 7 to 11! Not 24 hours because some idiot might need to smoke or have a beer at 3 A.M.

But, uh... some people are not Christian and don't celebrate the holiday. Some people like to make the extra money you get on Christmas and only work half the day. And some people celebrate the holiday on a different day. And for those who are lonely, working on the holiday might ease the pain.

That's fine, but don't force the ones that want to be at home to work!

No, I'm not a sports fan. I even had to look up what BCS was!

Just curious, why do you ask?

Kazan, this is off the subject, but I was wondering if you will be watching the BCS game on jan 7th?

I had a feeling it was connected to my moniker when I saw who was playing. And when you come from the Buckeye state and sport the name of a team in Louisiana, one could wonder!

No, really does not matter to me who wins. Don't watch sports whatsoever. But I have a feeling who you are leaning towards. I recently worked with quite a few people from Louisiana with thick Canjun accents. They were all big Tiger fans. Somewhere I have a Tiger beer can from the 70s. Once again, got it for the tiger, did not even know about the team then.

Ohio buckeyes vs. LSU tigers, I was wondering who you were pulling for

I don't find it odd that we (US) work on boxing day....primarily because there is no such thing as Boxing day in the US. I grew up seeing "Boxing Day (Canada)" on the calendar and thinking that Canadians were REALLY weird to have a day celebrating boxing. Hockey, I could see....but boxing?

"Family Video" (which just opened here a few weeks ago) advertised that it would be open on Xmas from 10am until midnight. Am I the only one who sees the humour in that?

I miss UK Boxing Day TV. The TV here stinks like smelly poo. :protest:

Do you also find that the best British TV series are not available on DVD in the US?

You can get Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses, but they only released the first season of Peep Show on DVD in the US.

I also wanted to see that BBC series Life on Mars, but that hasn't made its way over here.

they have "One Foot in the Grave" available on DVD here  that show is sooo funny...

I'm from Canada and we get the day after Christmas (commonly known as "Boxing Day") off. In all my years of working, I have NEVER had to work the day after Christmas and find this to be one of the weirdest "differences" between Canada and the U.S.

Thankfully, today is not one of my regularly scheduled days to work, so I'm off. But, there will be years in the future that I will have to work the day after Christmas. I will find that very awkward and my co-workers all know that I will only do so reluctantly.

Anybody else finding having to work the day after Christmas hard?

i've worked the day before, day of christmas, and the day after. not a big deal.

folks, like you brother charles...will help increase the value of the dollar on the world market... :star:

i also, in the past have worked christmas..thanksgiving ..new years etc....

When I was working on Christmas Eve, I had a lot of people come and tell me how sorry they were that all of us had to work on Christmas Eve of all days. I am not sure if they were serious, trying to be a #######, or both. If you really believed that, you would be at home or at the park/church with your family, not here. Please, STFU.

In Brazil we have the day before Christmas off so we usually eat turkey that night so we have the next day (actual Christmas) to recover and back to work on the 26th.

Same with the 31st, we don't work on the 31st and we don't work on Jan 1st, of course, with some exceptions, depending on the job you have you have to work Christmas and New Year's.

Boxing Day is a public holiday recognised in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations.

It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day; but can move to 27 December or 28 December if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday. The movement of Boxing Day varies between countries.

Boxing Day is a traditional celebration dating back to the Middle Ages, of which the primary practice is the giving of gifts to employees, the poor, or to people in a lower social class. The name has numerous folk etymologies; the Oxford English Dictionary attributes it to the Christmas box; the verb box meaning: "To give a Christmas-box (colloq.); hence the term boxing-day." Outside the Commonwealth, the holiday is sometimes called "St. Stephen's Day".

It is tradition in most families to spend the day with other family members as a sort of 'second' Christmas Day, where presents are exchanged, the left-overs of the previous day are eaten or another family meal is prepared in celebration.

It is nice to have the extra day holiday after Christmas to get over your indulgences of the day before, a bit like the Scots have January 2nd as a holiday to get over celebrating the New Year :P
