I'm from Canada and we get the day after Christmas (commonly known as "Boxing Day") off. In all my years of working, I have NEVER had to work the day after Christmas and find this to be one of the weirdest "differences" between Canada and the U.S.

Thankfully, today is not one of my regularly scheduled days to work, so I'm off. But, there will be years in the future that I will have to work the day after Christmas. I will find that very awkward and my co-workers all know that I will only do so reluctantly.

Anybody else finding having to work the day after Christmas hard?

i've worked the day before, day of christmas, and the day after. not a big deal.

Yes...it seems odd that people are back to work on boxing day....as a British citizen i think Easter holidays are also quite short for most americans in comparison to that of the UK.

I don't think most people get any days off for Easter in the U.S. My husband (USC) always works Good Friday.

On the other side of the coin, we go a long time after New Year's Day to get another day off in Canada. Easter is the first day off after New Year's in Canada.

It's a VERY big deal for me.... I would NEVER work for a company that made you work all those days. I work to live.... not live to work.

I worked today and don't mind it at all. In fact I find it odd that Christmas is a holiday at all since it has religious implications. I would rather have another holiday in the summer instead of a day off in the winter.

I miss UK Boxing Day TV. The TV here stinks like smelly poo. :protest:

Do you also find that the best British TV series are not available on DVD in the US?

You can get Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses, but they only released the first season of Peep Show on DVD in the US.

I also wanted to see that BBC series Life on Mars, but that hasn't made its way over here.

What's really sad? I remember the days when retailers did believe in giving their employees holidays off. And customers respected and understood retail employees have families and lives too!

It would be nice to have a day off after Christmas but I do not find it odd at all... You go right back to work, the Day after Thanksgiving in Canada but you get 3 days off after US Thanksgiving :P possibly to digest all that turkey :D

Ok, now I get Christmas eve and Christmas day off. Now you are saying that my employer should give me the day after Christmas off also? I don't think the will go for that. But I would be game, that would mean another triple pay day for me. I would work that one every time! I work most holidays lately since the triple my money. But if business is slow they will close for two weeks at Christmas, That has not happened for the last 4 or 5 years.

We also get the day after Thanksgiving off!

I'll work both of those too.

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!

Baby due March 28, 2009
