Panic spread through the state of Hawaii on Saturday morning when residents received an alert on their phones warning of a ballistic missile threat that was accidentally sent out by Civil Defense. 

Scores of confused residents tweeted screenshots of the warnings after receiving them shortly after 8am local time.  

The message, which was written all in block capitals, read: 'BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. 

'SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL'.  

Many claimed soon afterwards that they contacted Civil Defense which told them it was a mistake. 

Hawaii News Now reported confirmation from the agency that it was an error.

The true root cause is that the wireless industry has successfully convinced the FCC to not have a way to test the system. A method is expected in 2019.

 

This should light a fire under these folks.

Official word is that the guy has been "reassigned to other duties."

   Since I lived in Hawaii for 10 years, I just wanted to clarify here - in general, I've never really seen Hawaiians panic per se. I haven't talked to any of my old friends since this happened, but I would guess many of them would be trying to figure out which side of the islands would get the best surf from a missile strike and then head over in that direction.
