Chevy aveo making a sound

Ok, my Chevy Aveo is a 2007 with only 33k miles, so still under warranty. Ive noticed for the past month that when I accelerate it makes an annoying whining sound and when I take off the acceleration the whining dies down or stops. Its annoying. Anyone have any idea whats going on? Could it be the transmission? Im thinking I can go ahead and take it to the Chevy dealership on Thursday since its still under warranty. I just dont want them to try to tell me they dont hear it, bcz its loud and annoying. Any advice?

If you look online there are tons of problems with Chevy Aveos. Due to their cheap pricing they were popular but now, after they've been out for a couple of years, people are reporting all kinds of problems.

I'm sure the dealership is used to it. Take it in and complain if they don't fix it.

yah the price was excellent, but its soon to be out of warranty after the next 3k miles, so I rather go take it in this week and get it checked out and fixed if necessary.

Sounds like it's low on transmission or steering fluid. Some of the newer cars have sealed transmissions, so you have to take it to the dealer anyways. Does it get better once it warms up? Have you seen any drips under the car, or anything that looks wet?

hmmm nothing that ive noticed like that. Last month when I got my oil changed, the guy did suggest I get my transmission fluid changed too, but it was too expensive at that shop so I didnt get it done. I wonder if that has to do with it? It makes the whining sound when I press on the gas to go.

Sounds like it could be the belt or a belt pulley. I went online and looked up Aveo probs and there are many so I guess it could a good reason as any.

Describe the type of whining, long whistling? Check the belts. If they look worn, replace them. If that is the case, you've duped by the dealer. Bring it back to your dealer to have it fixed since timing belts last a long time.

If not, I need to know a little bit more detail besides just whining. Any other noises?

That is why he need to bring it to the dealer. A car with only 33k miles and the timing belt is worn to the point of replacement. Something is screwy with the dealership.

im pretty sure its not a timing belt. sounds like a transmission or something like that to me, just not sure if anyone else had a similar issue with a chevy aveo. 33k miles and it shouldnt make that annoying sound.

My timing belt went on my ford at around 83k was never changed as far as I know before that. It was rated to last till around 60k and held out a bit longer! When my belt was going it would pickup speed like #######, hopped almost into 2nd gear (it had slipped a few teeth by this point I think) finally the belt died at the shop luckily! Unluckily the belt didn't break and it took them 2 weeks to figure out what went wrong lol.. All in all I think we paid around $300 or so to have it fixed, belt, labor and we got the tensioner replaced as well.

What I did when I first heard weird sounds was to find a form just like this.. I'm sure there's plenty out there for chevy. I found one for ford or in your case chevy owners head over to the aveo section and do a few searches. I can almost guarantee you, you will either find the same problem posted by some other poor soul or make a post and someone out there will know what it is.

It's always better to go in well armed if you have to take your car back in to be fixed. I told our mechanic at the start.. check the belt per the advice I'd gotten on a ford message board and he ignored it and wasted 2 weeks of his time and labor on fixing my car lol. In the end the guy on that message board knew exactly what it was first time without ever having to see or touch the car, he'd been there done that a 100 times before am sure. Our mechanic never seen a belt just strip teeth like that yet still look new on the outside.. then again that's what he gets for not pulling the cover and troubleshooting it thoroughly from the start. Ah well...

I guarantee it is not the timing belt. The timing belt controls the relation between the camshaft and the crankshaft if it was to fail or slip it would be a catastrophic failure and the car would not run. Timing belts are also toothed so they don't whine when the slip.

It could however be one of the accesory belts or the transmission if it is an automatic. A whine during early accleration is a typical symptom of a slipping belt or a hydraulic pump that is low on fluid. The two most common hydraulic pumps in a car are the power steering pump and the pump inside the automatic transmission. The belt could be worn out but I would wager a guess that the belt is simply not tight enough. The tension in the accesory belts become relaxed as they age because they stretch. Usually the tensioning pulley can accomodate this, but I wouldn't be suprised that a cheap Korean car like the Aveo(real name Daewoo Kalos) wouldn't have a properly function tensioning system.

Another, though less likely possiblity is that one of the bearings for the fan, ac pump, or tension pully is worn. However, this is usually due to an overtightened belt and doesn't typically stop at different accelerations only changes pitch and volume.

Because you don't seem to be able to diagnose the problem yourself, take the car to the repair shop. Just make sure it is doing the whine when you get there and does it in front of the tech or else they might not fix it.
