Psychiatric Referral After Medical

Hi everyone,

My husband completed his immigration medical on July 1st. He was asked about marijuana use and drug tested. He was clean. My husband felt that he was scrutinized because he was asked if he was a Rastafarian and he answered yes. (He does wear his hair in locs.)

He attended his interview yesterday and everything went well. His medical however was not there and our case has been placed in administrative processing. We found it strange that his medical was not forwarded to the consulate considering it had been completed two weeks prior.

I called Andrew's Memorial Hospital in Kingston to find out why my husband's records were not forwarded to the consulate. I was told that I couldnt get that information and they would need to call my husband. They called and told him that his records were not sent because he needs to complete a psych evaluation and there is a referral at the office that he needs to pick up. We are both annoyed and shocked that the hospital would delay our process for a psychiatric referral.

My husband has no history of mental disorders or drug abuse. I read that when a panel physician cannot diagnose a mental disorder or drug dependency, they have the right to refer a specialist to help come to a conclusion.

I am now wondering about what happens next.

What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?

Do we have to pay for this evaluation?

How long does it take for this to be over so that the panel physician can sign and send his medical to the consulate?

How long will we remain in "administrative processing" at the consulate?

Thanks so much for helping. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Just disappointed that there is now a delay in our case. I have been waiting to be with my husband for almost two years.

He did not admit to any drug use. He told her that he does smoke tobacco and cigarettes. Her only response was that he has nice teeth for someone who smokes tobacco.

She told him that even though he is not admitting to using drugs, it would make her uncomfortable not to test him, so she did and he was clean.

Then she made a referral for the psychiatrist days later.

New procedure, whenever someone takes a drug test, they are automatically referred to the psychiatrist. They will conduct the eval and send the embassy a recommendation.

If he is clean and drug free, then he will not have a ban.

This Is INTERESTING. What's Going On With The Kingston Embassy And Andrews Memorial ?! My Husband Did His Interview Lasr Month And His Visa Was Refused Based On Health Related Grounds. During His Medical Exam He Admitted To Using Marijuana In The Past However He Is Clean Cause He Has Stopped Using It A Longtime Ago. The Consulate Said The Reason For Refysal Is Because The Doctor Said He Has An Addiction To Illegal Substance But Didnt Show Any Proof As To Whether Or Not He Failed The Medical Exam. He (The Consular) Did Say He Has To Do The Medixal Exam Again And Gave Him A Date. But What Are The Steps Towards Doing So?!

Aren't they supposed to drug test everyone? Regardless of past use or not? I guess I'm confused because I didn't think they just took people's word for it, or randomly decided who would get drug tested or not. I thought it was part of the medical exam for everyone.

I actually found a powerpoint used to train panel physicians and civil surgeons and I read the CDC Guidelines they follow. Not everyone is tested. They choose who they want to test based on their discretion. Once you say you have used they usually do testing. In many other cases on VJ, if the applicant is clean they dont interfere. It seems like in Jamaica any admission to use gets a psych referral which doesnt seem to end well in a lot of cases. You know Im praying HARD about mine because it is BEYOND ridiculous. I guess to this panel physician, saying you are Rastafarian is an indirect admission of marijuana use. I cant think of any other reason she would put us through this mess.

Im sorry to hear this and we are going through the same thing currently.

My husband actually did not admit to using but this is what his psych referral letter says. We are still both shocked, confused, annoyed, stressed, (insert more adjectives here). We can only wait to see how the psych eval will go and pray these people find their moral compasses soon.

Did your husband get a psych eval or was he just denied?

If so where did he get an evaluation and how did that go?

Ive seen where other folks on VJ talk about the rigidity in the Jamaican consulate with marijuana and that just a mere admission of use, even though it was long ago, results in a one year ban.

Was your husband's new medical date a year from his last interview?

Sorry Guys I Couldnt Sign Back Into My Other Accnt . He Did Not Ger Referred To An Psych Evaluations . And The Consulate Gave Him A Date To Which He Should GoBack To The Embassy. So Now He Has To Wait A Year

Howevee Idk Exactly How It Works. Like Does He Just Go And Do The Medical And Go Back To The Embassy Or Is It Something The Embassy Would Have To Reschedule For Me.

??? If you have locks, you're guilty! My husband has locks and does NOT smoke anything at all. Although I know each case is different, this post just made me 10X nervous on top of the nervousness I'm already feeling due to all the stories we hear about the embassy in JA. Geez!!!

Well it is no several years later and its sad to say that Jamaica has not changed at all. My fiancé had is interview before his medical (expedite case) and the consular told him he was approved and once his medical came in the visa would be issued.  He has locs and she drilled him about marijuana use, he admitted to use in the past and was referred to a psychiatrist. We are not awaiting his results from the psychiatrist. I am praying and hoping that he does not give us any issue. My fiancé's drug screen was clean but the person at the medical told him the final say is for the psychiatrist.
