Well, V & T, you are just digging your hole deeper. Opinions just don't matter--what matters is the law and how to operate within it. If you want to go beyond what is required, then state it that way so we don't waste a zillion electrons confusing people--what you did was no help at all, completely wrong in its implications, and therefore the rest of us had to correct it over and over. What a waste of time !!
Next time just say it is an opinion and you have no idea what the law is, and then we can treat it that way. we are all entitled to our own opinions, but we can't make up our own facts, particualry when it impacts peoples' lives.

Just to update, I didn't have any trouble traveling with just my Green Card and extension letter (and passport of course). The only thing is that the CPB officer said the 1 year starts from the date on the letter and not the GC. He even entered it in the system, not sure if that is accurate (?).

So many amazing replies and suggestions. May I please thank everyone for their kindness in replying. Last night for the first time my husband took me out to a function at his workplace. It was absolutely fantastic - I loved it! Ladies were saying that they will now call me to go to lunch and everyone we met was so friendly and welcoming. Of course you never know if people mean what they say and whether or not they will actually get in touch, but just the offers, coupled with the replies on here have made me feel so much better. It's this site I found called Coursera (www.coursera.org) where they've partnered with universities to offer courses online (some even give certificates of completion). Holding what up? You're not even at the minimum processing time yet. When things do take forever, lots can hold it up. RFEs, background checks, the sheer number of applicants ... There are only so many people to process so many cases.

Buddy, you've come to the party a bit late and in my opinion, you are bit unaware of the rules of this party. If you expected fireworks, sorry not gonna happen. If you expected verizon LTE speedy processing, not gonna happen.
You could get lucky and have your application processed by your local USCIS adjudication facility, which in my case in New York (and is processing files incredibly faster than the CSC for the past 3-4 months).

It has been said many times here. Here's the best explanation that I've seen.
Pretend you're in a shop buying groceries and there are several cashiers but all lines are equally long. You're placed in a random line (and you don't really have a choice here, though exceptions apply).
You could end up in a line where the cashier is taking forever to ring someone up and bag things up, or you could end up in a queue where most people have very few things to buy and is being processed by the fastest cashier out there. Lot has to do with luck.
Bottom line is every processing center is different and every case is different.

After you send his I-175, you will receive your NOA1 shortly. The NOA states that he is allowed to live and work in the country for a year. If he travels after his GC expires, he must carry the letter as proof.

If it's working fine right now then my suspicion is probably correct that its DNS related.
DNS takes a friendly name like www.visajourney.com and turns it into a numerical address known as the IP address. This is because computers don't really know what to do with a written name like visa journey, and so DNS servers translate that name into an IP address that is attached to the server that the website sits on. Once it has that, the computer can begin to form a route from it, to the web server.
Sometimes these addresses get a little muddled up. The route changes or the server gets moved and so has a different IP address. So by design your computer will only hold that address for a certain amount of time before it forces itself to get a new one. Ipconfig /flushdns forces your computer to forget it when you run the command rather than wait.
In this case, I think the normal waiting period expired and your computer went and fetched a new translation.
Useful to know for the future!
(This is a really rough and explanation of DNS but it gives you a basic idea if what the commands do. I do not believe in giving someone a command to run on their computer without telling them what it does!)

Put the newer passport with the longer expiration date, and bring that passport to put the visa in--why would you do it the other way around? In his country, is the old passport even valid anymore? Most countries void the old passport or make you turn it in.

Any time you get race involved in these situations reason and logic go out the window for many people.
I'll give you my speculation of what happened based on the facts that we know.
-According to the 911 tape, zimmerman saw someone who looked suspicious and called 911 (is that the move of a self appointed cop?).
-According to the tape, as he relays info over the phone THe 17 yr old starts to approach him. ... and keeps coming, then he suddenly breaks and runs.
-Zimmerman is told not to follow but does.
- at this point we must rely on what others heard and saw.
-I suspect the Black kid took offense at being followed which might be a reasonable reaction and 5'3" zimmerman and 6" 2" Martin engage. We don't know who made the first move.
-We can hear from other 911 calls someone crying for help right before the shooting, the teens father said it is not his sons voice, WHO THIS VOICE TURNS OUT TO BE IS KEY.
-Eye witnesses puts the teen as the dominate party in the struggle but that does not answer who started it.
* Did zimmerman in is desire to stop someone who looked and acted as a suspicious person grab him to keep him from escaping? (sounds very probable)
* Did the teen get pissed about what he felt was profiling and attack zimmerman (also probable)?
One of the things I think is unfortunate in all of this (that has been over looked) it the unfounded attacks on Zimmerman because he cared enough about his neighborhood to try to make it better. I have not heard any reports where he was excessive in this roll in "neighborhood watch" or was obsessed with some small amount of authority.
In fact who would you rather have as a neighbor, the Community watch guy or the teen who was on suspension when this happened?
When this is all said and done, I don't think we will find a bad person in either party, it was just a few missteps on both sides which lead to this terrible ending of Martins life.
