  1. Make sure you read everything carefully too. Lots of different numbers.

Nonimmigrant visa number should be printed on your K-1 visa which is in your passport

The I-94 number is printed on the I-94 which should be stapled in your passport

There is also an "A" nummber (Alien Registration Number) that should be written on the back of the I-94.

He should be ale to apply for a SSN 2 weeks after entry and prior to the 76th day after arrival. Don;t wait to long or you'll have to wait until he receive EAD with AOS application. (Some applied sooner than two weeks after arrival and were good to go but typically it takes a little time for his name to show up in the system.

    Good Luck!!!!

eeee. i'm guessing the I-94 # is the one printed right under "departure number"? 11 numbers?

and i don't see an immigrant visa number at all! i see "control number", "passport number", "PET N:", "A#", a number in red, and then a bunch of gobbeldy-###### at the bottom of the page :\

turns out our ssa office is only 8 blocks away! we're on our way now! thanks for the help :)

  2. hello! first time poster in the aos forums.

my fiance moved here last month and we are getting married may 7th. we are working on our aos paperwork and have a few questions.

where can we find his I-94 number and nonimmigrant visa number? we may be overthinking this. any help would be appreciated!

also, when can my fiance get his ssn? i noticed it asked if he had one on the paperwork and i didn't know he could get one before the aos.

    thanks in advance!

  3. hello everyone!

g's moving day to the states is just 2 weeks away and i have a VERY important question for you...

do they ask how much money you have when you cross the border with the k-1 visa? do you need a certain amount to cross?

because my fiance has practically NONE. i mean seriously. is there a baseline requirement or do they just let you pass through without asking questions like that?

    thanks again, you guys!

  4. the very first thing to do once you get to the states?

Log in to netflix.com and sign up

While waiting for netflix, watch tv shows at hulu.com

honestly? he's probably more excited about these new prospects than anything else ;)

For NYC, all he needs is his passport to get married. You got get the license first and then you have to wait 24 hours to get married once the license is issued. You'll need at least 1 witness. I'd recommend going to the City Clerk's office downtown. It's really nice and efficient there! And the best part is you get the marriage certificate on the spot, so you can file AOS the next day if you want :)

Once he's been there for a couple of weeks, he should go apply for his SSN. He'll need his passport, K1, I-94 and I *think* long form birth certificate. Only certain social security offices in NYC can give out a SSN for the first time, so check out the website or call before you go.

For a Driver's License, once he has his SSN, he can get his DL. If he has an Ontario license, they'll do a swap, and you need to bring the SSN, passport, K1, I-94. The DL will have "Temporary Visitor" stipulation that is valid for the term of the I-94. Then, once he gets his EAD, he has to go back and get that stipulation extended. It honestly is more worthwhile to just wait until you get the EAD to get this done and use his Canadian license in the interim for ID. I only got it with the I-94 because I changed my name and had bank cards in my married name. The DL then has the temporary visitor thing on it for a 1 year period, instead of the 3 month period. Sounds confusing, but it's really not that bad.

If you need any help with places or where to go in NYC just PM me!

Also wanted to add, if you do go to the City Clerk's Office, your witness also needs to show photo ID and must be over 18.

gah! this is so much help! thank you so so much! he doesn't have a driver's license, but he does have an ontario i.d. card and his health card, so hopefully that will apply as well. i will definitely pm you in the near future before my head explodes ;p

thanks for your help, one and all!

  5. hello once again, my dears.

once again i am freaking out and could use some help.

g will be moving either the end of february or 1st of march. at work yesterday i was thinking about getting married at the justice of the peace and how we need a marriage license. obviously we will need some sort of i.d. for this, right? what will grant use as i.d.? his k-1?

i figures he needs a state i.d. and an ssn, right? but for ME to get a state i.d. (and i've lived here 11 years) i needed SIX points of identification! grant doesn't have that! what do we do about getting him some i.d.?

    thanks again, folks!

  6. Haha. Hanging onto the paranoia to the bitter end, I see.

until well AFTER the bitter end, krikit. it's how i was created... :)

Yeah, just make sure your fiance is the first car and that the other cars are directly behind him.

I went over the border 2 weeks ago and we had 3 cars. I went in the building by myself, but honestly it was a breeze. Make sure to get there early so that your fiance doesn't spend an eternity inside.

The BG shouldn't think that his family is staying unless they indicate so.

what paperwork, besides the visa and birth certificate, will be needed at the poe, peachey? (thank you)

  7. Sounds pretty normal to me - so normal in fact I can't even use my imagination to come up with at possible bad border crossing scenario

    (but i'm sure someone will!)

    :D well that's a relief to hear!

i, myself, came up with a possible bad border crossing scenario though. if you will indulge me- the border guards think that all three of them won't be going back to canada and staying in nyc instead. i suppose his mum and friend will both have to show the requisite proof that they have jobs, homes, etc and will indeed be going back to ontario as soon as my dude is all settled in.

huh. guess i just answered my own question.

    :|

    carry on! (and thanks)

  8. my fiance is coming to the states (finally!) march 1st.

i'm afraid his POE is going to be complicated though, as his mother and his mother's friend are driving he and his stuff here to nyc.

his mom's friend owns the truck. i suppose they'll drive here and then leave a day or two later.

is there anything that might impede him from poe-ing in an easy manner since he will not be on his own and will have 2 people with him?

    thanks in advance, guys!

  9. When he asked if I had a job in the U.S., I said that I didn't need to work because my husband made good money. He replied, "well, not everyone is as rich as you." Since my husband's career is more important than mine, I wanted to stay with him until we could move to the U.S. Now, I may find a job and once the visa is issued, figure out if I want to stay there or not.

    :o

yes. this comment is rather shocking and presumptuous. completely out of line.

i'm so sorry you have to go through all of this. :(

  10. and thank you for the congrats! in some ways i'm glad we went through all of this to be together. i think some adversity builds character. and it's a helluva story for the grandkids! (why, back in my day...blah blah blah until you lose all will to live).

good luck to all those who have their interviews soon! you'll do great, no doubt!
