Seems it’s extended automatically. Mine expired in June of last year and I never sent any info anywhere. 

If you have your case number then your file may have already been sent to Montreal. Have you tried to do your DS160 and book an interview?  In Canada the K1 books their own interview. 

At the interview, the CO can extend it: https://fam.state.gov/fam/09FAM/09FAM050207.html "the consular officer may revalidate the petition any number of times for additional periods of four months from the date of revalidation, provided the officer concludes that the petitioner and the beneficiary remain legally free to marry and continue to intend to marry each other within 90 days after the beneficiary's admission into the United States."

The are no notices given to K1 petitioners when the application arrives at NVC.  NVC will only send a notice when they send the application to the consulate.

I have, and ive done tons of research to both however its unrelated to my questions. Doing the cr1 is not an option for us, not only is it longer but we have absolutely no options to visit to get married at all during 2021. We'd be lucky if early 2022 had that option at all too. That seriously increases the duration so it isnt worth it.

Thank you! It seems we have similar timeline. I emailed the embassy in Montreal last week, but nothing useful was given. Basically more waiting time.

You can start preparing for the interview. Gather all documents you will need. 

There’s nothing for you to do at this point. You will receive notification from NVC when a case number is assigned 

Nothing to do at NVC. You can call after 4-5 weeks to get your case number and invoice number. Montreal is moving very slow at the moment. They were making great progress from September-November but since mid Nov, they have not given any new K1 interviews for reasons they’re not saying. They are still claiming to process K1 visas on their website and emails though so I’m hoping they start up again soon. My case was approved in April and just left NVC for MTL on Dec 8th. It arrived 8 days later but since then there’s been nothing.
 
if anything, I urge you to comment on the consulate’s social media posts and email them asking about K1. That way we keep a little pressure on them and they do something for K1’s soon. The sooner the backlog for the people in front of you clears up the sooner you’ll get an interview.
